That is, once braking is engaged, I could use another throttle, or POT, to modulate regen intensity.

I'd suggest staying off the POT while testing so you don't modulate the intensity of your reality and skew the results.

I'm not a hub motor user nor do I plan on being one anytime soon... but I can appreciate the clever and simple solution.

Same here. I do in fact use hub motors as the front motor on 2wd bikes that I ride daily in steep hills, but my personal interest would only be if I killed one of my two existing non-fat front motors and had to do a replacement. Beyond that this is just a really neat innovation to an otherwise entirely stale piece of technology. The sort of thing I would expect ev ery hub motor manufacturer to try and imitate... which given the involvement of Mainland China, I think that means the patent on this isn't going to be 100% respected.
