Good News For Owner of Bosch Powered E-bikes

Really? Took 9 months to get a spoke magnet.
That is rediculous. I got one on ebay for $20, shipping included. That makes no sense. Who did you get it from? I just checked google and they can be had for $11 plus shipping at various dealers in the USA, Canada, the UK and EU.

I requested one 7/17 at Propel and it was finally available 5/18. Cost about $11+tax. Sure, it was listed online at several places like Electric Cyclery but not stocked and subject to the idiosyncrasies of the Bosch supply chain. Before the Travel Charger was discontinued I tried to get one. It was in several online catalogs, but I was told “supply chain issues” and that it would take either a long time to arrive with “never” as an option.

Just because you checked Google today doesn’t mean that there won’t be issues next time the last of X is sold and the waiting begins for the next batch.

That is terrible. Hopefully the new distribution arrangement will correct that.

This is one reason I always check at ebay. I may have to wait an extra week for an item to arrive from Europe but what is for sale is supposed to be in stock and ready to ship. In addition, there are frequent price breaks for "old stock" or close outs. I got a generic spoke magnet that worked just fine last year on ebay for $5.50 plus $3 shipping. There is one right now in France for $5.95 shipping included. I get hard to find boat parts on ebay as well.

You have verified this works?
Why do you think it wouldn’t? It’s the same principle, a magnet going by a sensor coil to measure speed. But I can test with a magnet from my parts box. Or you can try. Just wiggle any magnet near the sensor and you should see the head unit showing a speed.

Because the service team at Propel said it wouldn’t work when I mentioned going this route. I kind of doubt that they were making me wait to get the $11 out of me.

I find it interesting: my comment that Bosch spoke magnets were back ordered for months elicits a “go get magnets and try them out yourself” response.

I meant no disrespect with that. It is just so ingrained in me to try to fix things myself. And knowing how these speed sensors work this seemed like the easiest solution.

Is there a good thread here reviewing Bosch versions of their midrive? I’m still riding early BBS01, 250w and 350w. Two of each. Outstanding critters if you still “ride” a bicycle. Work through the gears, as if it were there only to ASSIST??!!

Guess I need to visit my incredible nephew in Mad Town. Ravi? You in Madison?

Cateye spoke magnet didn't work on my Bosch, Yamaha, Shimano or Brose systems. It's too small & weak...

When I ran it by the sensor it registered, but installed on the spoke it was too far away to be sensed.

I keep some neodymium coin-shaped magnets in my kit and can stack them to help with spacing or just add to create a stronger magnetic field. Very inexpensive on Aliexpress and eBay. N52 is a desired magnet rating, the mid to high 40s are good too. There are some USA sources for faster shipping.

Interesting. I tried with two magnets from a Specialized and a Cateye computer and both worked. Magnet clearly doesn't equal magnet. Probably also a matter of your bike's design, how close the sensor is to the spokes. Maybe another option is to put the sensor on a spacer to bring it closer.

didn't work on multiple bikes, magnet was simply too weak, about 1/3 size of ebike magnets
