Electric Car thread

For who? You're making some very general statements. No doubt that EVs are not for everyone. For a large chunk of the population who are able to fully charge while they are sleeping and occasionally do 500 mile roadtrips, EVs are already working. Even apartment dwellers who don't have access to home charging can utilize an EV if they have Level 2 chargers at work. Obviously there are some rural parts of the country without charging infrastructure or a reliable way to charge at home; it's not for them (yet). You're right that EV tech may still be in it's infancy, but I'll counter with "If it's this good now, imagine how great it's going to be in the next few years." And no, it's not going to "be practical" in 10-20 years, it already is the most reasonable choice for a lot of people. It is a different mind-set; filling up a full tank in 3 minutes is great but so is having a full battery when you wake up or get out of work...and that doesn't even cost me an extra trip to the station.

I'm not anti-ICE. On the contrary, I've been in enthusiast groups for almost every car I've owned. I love the way they sound, I even love the way exhaust smells when a motor is running rich, I find it therapeutic to wrench on them. But EVs are the future (and now).
Confirmation bias is as strong as ever on EBR.

You’ve got the patience of Job dealing with someone’s politics (reflex) informing their position on tech…or science…

I'm with @WattsUpDude ... EVs are now... and will get better as more come out and infrastructure expands/improves.

The gas price hike was a non-issue for us as 2/3 of our cars are EV. And because we primarily drive the EVs, we only have to hit the gas station once or twice every 2 months to use the ICE for freeway trips.

And as I said, we really only charge on Level 1 (120v) at home... once we go solar, that's going to reduce our costs even more.

It's so convenient, less noisy, less hot and less maintenance. Every owner of an EV I know prefers it over ICE... and all it really takes is to get your first, even if it's just a PHEV to see the benefits.

Do you know how to use that term correctly? 😆 There’s a handful of us here sharing our experiences and overall happiness with electric cars but you’re dismissing that and still saying “it doesn’t work”? Let’s guess who has actual “confirmation bias”. I’m not even here advocating for the death of ICE vehicles. They will likely have their uses for a very long time.

Read more carefully . I said they work in an urban environment . It’s sad you can’t deal with different opinions .

After careful research and considering repair costs and reliability ratings we decided its to soon to invest in all EV. We’re spoiled. Careful research got us cages that were virtually trouble. A $20,000 investment ran flawlessly for 150,000 miles and at 10 model years later sold for $5000. The best rated EV’s are unobtanium in our market. Our most reliable choice was the hybrid we paid for and ordered. As always YMMV.

It’s a moot point in my town. No EVs are available. I also agree it’s a tough decision ,considering how we have nearly perfected the ICE.

I can’t go there. I’ll probably be taking my dirt nap before ICE and fossil fuels are not adding to climate change... if ever!
The idea that EVs are “clean” , is highly disputable. China has a new coal plant coming on line every week, so what we do is nothing more than symbolic ,when you look at the big picture.

We have very different views. All good! I can live with that. Me? I’m not comfortable using China as a reason to not make behaviour changes to be less of a burden on climate change.

EVs = early adopters, those with the $ means to buy them, not needing long trips or towing ability
PHEV = good for both short and long trips, great if you only have short commutes
HYBRIDS = decent mileage, more availability, if you don't have access to a garage
ICE = less costly models available, sometimes only what people can afford, if you have one that works keeping it and driving it reduces landfill waste

There's something for everyone, not even talking about the many benefits of walking, biking, mass transit, and working from home 😀

How do you rationalize riding an Ebike ,when human powered is much cleaner ? And I agree we can have different opinions and not resort to silly name calling.

I have 3 cars, 2 ICE and one EV. I rarely drive the ICE vehicles as the EV is faster, more nimble and cheaper to drive. My only concern now is road trips as I have experienced randomness on availability and reliability of charging stations around So Calif and AZ. I did do a 200 mile round trip this past weekend and returned home with 17% battery left after driving 80 mph on the freeway with the AC set at 69. Started out the trip at 90% battery. Range anxiety was just starting to kick in about 30 miles from home!

That is my reason for not considering an EV. We are blast through from destination to destonation stopping only for fuel and bio-breaks. Somewhere on interstate in New England, there was a dedicated area for electric charging (dozen or so stations) with parking queue for those waiting. I don't recall if they were Tesla stations or generic. Stations were full, queue was full, line into queue. Did our bio-break, filled up with diesel (only one pump available), on the highway and nothing appeared to changed at the charge stations.

Some day, not in my lifetime.

ironically … it actually isn’t. once you stop losing weight, human power is food power. and unless your electricity comes from coal, the tiny tiny tiny amount of electricity that powers your ebike produces less environmental impact than most food. especially meat and dairy.
