E3 Dash...test riders?

To All that have tested and rode the E3 Dash,

I have pre ordered the Dash and im very excited to have it later this month. My wife has the 2013 metro...our first experience on a ebike. And like most we giggled and felt like a kid again. We both cant wait for me to get my Dash so we can ride together. Anyway my question to the ones that have rode the dash on a test run is this:

When in PAS does the throttle work when at a complete stop or not pedaling. The 2013 metro we have allows us to use the throttle when in PAS BUT we have to be pedaling. So when the Dash is not in T mode....when its in PAS 1,2, or 3 can or does the throttle work with out pedaling or at a stop so I can use throttle to start and then just stay in PAS mode 1,2, or 3?

Court I did not see that this was on your review. I assumed it was like the 2013 metro but the other day I saw a review and it looked like the bike was in PAS 3 and the guy doing review twisted the throttle and the bike took off. I was like...WOW that would be awesome if this is the case. Please hit me back....

Thanks
Justin

Justin, The 2014 Zuma and Metro have the same PAG/TAG+ system as the 2013 Metro. I have ridden the 2013 Metro and as I recall you can start in pedal or throttle and goose it with throttle while riding. The new Dash doesn't have the same system. I rode so many bikes that day that I may be a bit confused but my recollection is that you can start off in pedal assist which is smooth and almost instant or in throttle but you have to switch to throttle while riding to use it. I played with it a bit while riding the Dash and twisting the throttle in pedal mode didn't work. But, I didn't need it. Using a combination of the gears and any of the levels of 48v pedal assist was more than enough. You can easily switch to throttle mode if you like with the control on the bars.

I liked the Metro a lot and may buy the new one for my wife. I like the + system, but I think they only have it on three of their bikes. From the start, using pedal assist on the Dash is super responsive and I found myself not using the throttle on either of my two rides. What is so disarming about this bike, and Court mentions it in his review, is that being a direct drive gearless hub, the Dash setup is almost silent as you are riding the bike. It brought a smile to my face and I ordered one.

Let me know if you have any more questions. Oddly enough, I hadn't researched the E3 Dash at all prior to seeing and riding it. I rode the Nitro, Peak, Dash, Path+, Zuma, Metro. The Dash was a standout for me and the kind of riding I will do on paved bike paths and bike lanes on roads on our island.

Thanks Ralph,

I just reread my thread and sorry for grammar errs....rode/ridden/that have...haha I write these at work and most of the time my thoughts are interrupted.

I was hoping the Dash's throttle would work at all times. Also the 2013 metro (awesome BIKE) is less expensive than the new one and is 17" 43mm compare to the new one is 18". My wife is 5'5" and we had to buy a different seat post so we can get the seat lower so she can put her feet flat down. Not sure how tall your wife is but just fyi. Thanks again for your reply!
Justin

Great catch Justin. My wife is 5'3". She would not be able to ride the 2013 Metro. Back to the drawing board:). I am going to take her by the local dealer to look at the 2013 bikes this week.

[edited based on Larry's comment below]

Hey Justin, If I understand you correctly there are two questions and I'll try to answer as follows:
  • You can use the throttle while in one of four pedal assist modes, it overrides PAS mode.
  • You can also use the throttle to get started from standstill.
Love it! Always nice to be able to use the throttle without having to arrow down out of pedal assist mode. Many ebikes make you do this and it's kind of a pain

Thanks guys for the reply…..BUT plz watch this video. About 22 sec into the video stare closely at the number on the LCD. It is much easier to see if you make the video full screen. I'm almost sure the bike is in PAS level 3 and he twist the throttle and it Dashes off!!!! Right?? If this is true - THIS IS Awesome!!

That is some awesome news Larry!!! Thanks for clarifying. To me the Dash keeps separating itself further and further away from the competition. Any chance the dash will have an option to upgrade to a higher AH? 10,12,15? The bike now comes with a 48v8.7ah 417 wh. Is there a reason it is at 8.7 and not higher?

Justin - 400 Wh is about the norm. As high rate discharge 18650 cells continue to become available in higher capacities, we will be using them and be able to offer a replacement pack that are larger capacity then they are today.

The physical space inside the battery pack is limited, so the only way to get more capacity is either to enlarge the size of the case or use higher capacity cells.

Hope that makes sense. Please let me know if you have other questions.

Larry

Yes, thanks Larry. If I understand right….417WH/20=21 - so 21 miles full throttle on a flat surface is good. Plus PAS is at leased 30 miles and that should be just fine for my lifestyle. When the cells get a higher capacity - i just may buy a higher AH battery just for comfort and less anxiety over the battery dying out.

Justin - Because there are so many factors that effect range (Ambient temperature, weight of rider, terrain, etc..) its difficult to accurately calculate using your method but generally it will give you an idea. Our estimates with normal pedaling is 25 to 35 miles.

Thanks Larry. I understand there are many factors. My math was just an article i found on line. link below.

I read the delivery date is not the 17th but now the 24th? Are there some dealers getting them on the week of the 17th?

Thanks again for your feed back…super cool of you to be on here chatting back!! Thanks Justin

No. Looks like end of the month for the Dash. This is just a photo of it but I did ride one and it is a great bike.

I am now thinking a Low Step Zuma for my wife. Don't know when the new ones come out.

Sends a strong positive message when the President of the company is out front and involved as Larry Pizzi is with all of us. And even more impressive when you realize how big Curie is in the space.

My dealer called to give me a heads up that my E3 Dash shipped today from Currie. Since I am in Florida probably won't see the bike until this time next week, but good to know the bikes are shipping and nice of my dealer to call and let me know.

That's awesome Ralph! Getting close, can't wait to hear how it works for you :D

Awesome Ralph…plz keep me posted. I have not heard anything from my dealer. I did speak with currie today and they said it should be in the US any day. It has to go thro their in house QC and then they will be shipped out. Hoping to get mine next week.
