Different setting after firmware update. Sport vs. eMTB.

I had my Haibike XDuro Trekking RX at the LBS for a firmware update this week. During the first ride after I got it back I noticed that the function for what used to be "Sport" had changed (the third highest setting).
Instead of providing a stead, higher level of support it seemed to be irregular. It also flashes "eMTB" briefly when you switch into this level.
According to the Bosch website this is a setting specifically for the Performance Line CX (which my bike has) for mountain bikes. It provides dynamic feedback, based on irregular pedaling during mountain biking. Of course it is utterly useless, even a distraction, for my purpose of riding roads, at a steady pace and at higher speeds.
Before I go back to the store, do any of you know if this is a setting, like a radio button that needs to be checked, the LBS would have to activate during the firmware update?
Can I bring the bike back there and have them change it to the Trekking bike setting?

Update from my LBS:

They spoke with Bosch tech support and it is like I suspected. During the firmware update they have the option to select eMTB or standard setting. For the Performance Line CX the default selection is eMTB.

So if you ever do this with a Trekking bike make sure to remind your shop to select the right option.

I will bring my bike back to the shop and they'll fix it for me.

I am surprised that the update changed existing settings. Had mine done and it did not even change the current trip mileage.

During the Bosch training for dealers, software updates are discussed. The Emtb mode even for trekking bikes equipped with the CX motors is quite popular with many of our clients as you simply leave it in that mode and have the system determine automatically how much assistance is required based on rider effort/terrain. It’s a pretty cool mode.

The standard manual modes can also be updated where the rider can manually select all 4 modes as required and have the eMtb mode removed.

Thanks for clarifying from the dealer side!

Looks like my LBS just never had a trekking bike with the CX drive before and thus didn’t pay attention. But he let me watch as he reinstalled the Sport setting and I could see the options on the screen.
I for one did not care for the eMTB mode. I am used to riding a specific cadence and keep a steady torque. The eMTB mode made that near impossible. But I can see how it would benefit when riding off-road or for riders who are used to a more “stomping” style.

I recently had the shop update software on my Trek Powerfly. it is equipped with Performance Line CX and Purion. When I check the versions, it now reads 1.3.0.0 for the Purion, 1.8.0.0 for the drive unit and 1.8.0.0 for the powerpack. In the update, the SPORT function was replaced with EMTB and frankly, I can't tell any difference now between TOUR and EMTB. I have tested it on steep hills standing on the pedals with maximum effort while switching between TOUR and EMTB. I cannot detect any difference. If I switch on up to TURBO there is a large increase in motor assist, but at the cost of higher battery drain. I wanted the shop to re-program it and go back to SPORT, but they tell me that once it was updated to the new settings, they can't go back. When the shop did the upgrade, they also turned on the WALK function, but even though the Purion display now says WALK when you push it's button, nothing happens when I push the "+" button. (That is a minor issue, I'd probably never use WALK anyway.)

I can tell you for certain that it is possible to set it back to Sport instead of eMTB. I saw them do it on my bike.
You can not downgrade the software version I believe.

OKay, it has been several weeks now and for my type of riding, EMTB isn't working. I understand from this forum that it is possible to remove EMTB and revert to SPORT, however after several trips back to my bicycle dealer (a 70 mile round-trip), they have been unsuccessful in figuring out how to do that. At least one time, and possibly more, they called Bosch and talked to a representative, but from what I understand the representative was more concerned with selling the EMTB function than in solving my problem. Does anyone know of a good technical representative in Bosch that I can refer my shop to for assistance? I love the bike and everything else about the Bosch system, but if I ever get my SPORT function back, I'll probably never have another software update done to it.

You state that the standard manual modes can be updated and the EMTB mode removed. My bicycle shop has made several attempts to do that, but so far they do not find a method to do it in the Bosch software. Any suggestions?

@yrloose Sorry to hear that you were having issues getting the EMtb feature removed from your bike. Sounds like the dealer was not using the most current software on their Bosch Diagnostics tool (either from a hard copy download or not having that computer connected to an Internet conenction). If a dealer is using the most current software version, changing parameters is fast and easy. The dealer simply connects the bike to the computer downloads the most current software version then a "Pop Up " window will appear asking the dealer to select the configuration type. One of those options is to revert to "Sport" mode.

The process should take no longer than 5-10 mins. I have a gut feeling that they may not have been talking to Bosch as this is a simple item to resolve.

hope this helps,

Will

Thanks for the info. I'll be seeing them later this week, I'll pass along what you've told me.

The eMTB mode did not work for me either so I asked my LBS to change it. They actually let me watch and it was super easy. When my bike was connected to the computer, there was a dropdown box with several options and one of them was "Sport". He simply chose that one and clicked "go" and that was that. All in all less than 5 minutes.
I believe Scotteretti might be right that they are not using the latest version of the dealer software.

Thanks for your help. I returned to the shop last week and took along a copy of your comments. They were successful this time in restoring the SPORT mode. I think what was happening before was that since they had already downloaded the revised software, they were skipping the download process and trying to find that popup window without it. This time they did a new download and it worked exactly as you described.

Glad it worked out.

Ideally a dealer should have the computer with this software on it connected to the web (or download the latest version beforehand) when doing updates so that the latest versions are always being used and that the customer always gets the latest update.
