I'm still a novice with my Garmin VIRB and synchronizing the GPS files with the video files has been an inexact science for me. I think I've gotten them pretty close but I know they are still slightly mismatched. And I'm probably not doing it correctly but if I want to save the video with the GPS overlay as a new video it takes literally hours (usually for only about an hour of video).

Really like your test videos.

Cool but sounds like a lot of editing time involved which would stir up my add.

A good feature other than a fit band would be a current watt and wh/mi display but not at all sure how you could do that. It would be better representative of what the bike's output is.

I know cams pick up noise easily but mid drives at speed are pretty loud it seems.

@JayVee
Thank you for sharing all the info, for a novice like myself it will take a while to learn all this, and in the end i will -more than likely- screw it up and get upset at myself and smash another laptop. One of these days i will give it a go, till then i will admire all your videos. Excellent work that you do making them.

@JayVee
I would also like to thank you for this, very much appreciated.

I have dashcams in my vehicles and have been using Dashcam Viewer and it works well. Essentially it syncs video and GPS data, both from the dashcam and while the video plays in one window, you see other windows with a bunch of other info, like a Google map with the moving point. Cool. Every dashcam manufacturer treats GPS data differently, some integrate GPS data with the video stream, some have separated video and data. But then when it comes to sharing with others, it fails miserably and had not found a way. Until now.

Now your idea is fantastic, love it. I will try it. I have a wannabe GoPro and a phone. A great idea for ebike enthusiasts.

Great tutorial, but DashWare failed to create the video and gives me the "Error rendering in MediaFoundationMedia Foundation Error.” I’m not shooting in 4K (yet) and my video has audio. GoPro recently acquired DashWare so development has stopped and their support said they didn't have a cure for this problem. So either I find a pre 1.9 version (1.7.37 recommended) or find something else. Appears a lot of people are switching to RaceRender, has anyone tried it?

Just curious, did you download and install the Microsoft fix I have in the 1 post? Because that fixed it for me.

I'm going to give race render a go. Looks good.
First thing I tried, but Win 8 reported I have a"newer" version. RaceRender is faster but doesn't look as nice, they also have a Mac version.

I also found a cool, free program for the iPhone called “Vidometer” I really like how they did the overlays and it’s pretty neat not having to do any post-production work. Although there is a Horizon / Tilt overlay, no Grade % information is provided, which for a cyclist video adds a lot of value.

They also sell bike mount cases for the iPhone with a quick change lens system so you can add a 170 degree lens like a GoPro.

I think it's a Windows 8 problem (It thinks I have a "higher" version) Might be time to upgrade to Window 10 cause I don't think my iPhone handlebar mount will allow me to use it's camera. I'll run some test this weekend.

I did a test video with Vidometer by turning my iPhone around in my holder and pointing it forward, too shaky for me. My GoPro clone is much less shaky. Maybe their case with the wide angle lens would be better but no grade info so I think I'll upgrade to Windows 10 first. How did you get the grade displayed on RaceRender?

As for the error "Error rendering in MediaFoundationMedia Foundation Error.” I've seen that. It occurred when I took a different video file that was encoded in mono. So I think it might have to do either with the sound or with the format of the video itself. With the GoPro files as source it works providing that you have an expected widescreen format (1920x1080 + 24, 48, or 50 FPS). It you want to use 4K you have to green screen it.

So I'm going to continue with Dashware. Even if it's a bit tricky, it's free.
Yep, my Dbpower 5000, GoPro wannabe puts out a mono sound track. I put the file in Final Cut Pro and turned it into a dual mono file so DashWare thinks it's a stereo file and it works fine. Thanks for the help.

You can actually make a green screen of the overlay data if that's the problem...
- Make a custom green gauge and put it behind all the others in Dashware
Sounds like a great idea would certainly make it easier to sync. I'm not sure what the purpose of the "green gauge" is

I think my best bet is to find a windows program that will convert the mono sound track into a dual mono (stereo) track so I can do it all on the same computer.

I picked up the HITCASE SNAP Case with mount and the wide angle lens for my iPhone 6s Plus. It was much steadier than my UP UPKJ iPhone Bicycle Mount, but still not very usable.

I want to buy a fitness band and display the BPMs in an overlay to see how much energy I'm expending on a given segment.

Have you gotten this to work? Does DashWare take in your heart rate data as another data source? I have an Apple Watch and would be interested in getting my HR data into an overlay.
