Hi there, looking for a little bit of help. I've struggled to find anything on the net, so thought I'd try you guys and see if any of you fine folk can help me. I'm looking for a replacement display, I want to upgrade it, for my Claud Butler Ridge 1.0 PAS bike. The display that is attached to the controller is a UART Topology DZ40 LCD Display with a 5 pin male connector, female connector comes from the controller.. Because of this male connector I'm have huge issues finding a replacement, can you help me? I've attached an image of the controller, really sorry it's a rubbish image but it's still connected to the bike.

From a quick Google search it looks like that display is Bafang UART compatible.
Is your motor a Bafang?
If so you should be able to use any Bafang UART compatible display.
If for some reason the manufacturer of this bike reversed gender on the display connector...
This may be your solution
I'm not personally familiar with your bike so do a little bit of research to verify all.
Yes, it's a Bafang motor. I've tried using a cable similar to change the gender of the lead but it didn't work with the display i got.
So, do you think if I swapped the direct lead coming out of the controller to a male ended one. Then the UART display with the female connector should work?
That's what is causing 99% of the issues I'm having with finding a new display. Most of the UART displays have the female connector, obviously my set up is currently i need a display with a male connector. If that makes sense.

My understanding and experience is that all Bafang UART displays are interchangeable. All I've seen come female on the display side... So yours is an oddity.
In this age of LGBTQ diversity and inclusion... a gender change is a non issue 😜
So yes the linked cable should work. Just double check connector diameter as there's variants from 6 to 9mm. 6 and 8 being the most common.

There's a bunch to choose from
The display on my two different mid drive UART are 6mm

Thank you very much, I'll look to swapping it's gender.

Curious.. Have you tried contacting the seller?
Like I said this display gender is odd... Maybe there's a reason for their madness and something about their set up is propriety and the display is matched.
I say this as the gender change cable should have work.

I did initially get in touch with Claud Butler about the display. I'll condense the story here, the original DZ40 display initially got damaged. I reached out to CB who were extremely helpful. But on my quest to find a replacement I came across a load of really good displays that would work to my needs much better than the DZ40. So, CB confirmed everything about my display and sent me out a new DZ40 unit which worked right out of the box. During my quest I did try 3 or 4 displays, that didn't work. So, this bring me to you guys. There's very little info on my controller and CB have only confirmed the display that I need that works with the bikes set up.

Ok... My experience is with mid_drives and all of the UART displays are interchangeable.
That said when looking for a new display the description often reads compatible with UART mid drive and hub motors
Things could be changing.

This is one of my displays and it shows mid and hub compatibility

Yer, I did order something that looks extremely similar to the above but when it arrived it was UART protocol 2. It was advertised as just UART. I've seen that on almost every video I've looked at when people just swap out their displays without any issues. But for me, it's a struggle, ha,ha.

I believe the UART Topology DZ40 LCD Displays with female connectors are for Bafang mid motor bikes. Is your Claud Butler bike one of them, or is it a hub motor. I think the signal pinout for hub motor displays is not only changed in gender, but the pins are arranged differently, If so, then a commercial male-male adapter won't work.

We had a poster with this issue several years ago. He bought a bafang mid motor display with female connector for his bafang hub motor controller. Gender was wrong, and a straight-thru male-male adapter cable didn't work, Then he cut the connector off, matched by wire color, and it still didn't work. It was my guess that the adapter cable probably connected power backwards and blew up the display, but the poster disappeared,

Hi there. The DZ40 has the male connector, the female end is the cable that goes to the controller. I've got a rear hub motor, think it's a G010 Bafang made. Yes, I've tried the conversion leads as well, that didn't work at all. That's the pin out for the display that is currently on the bike.

Think what I'm going to do over the weekend is to pull the controller out of the bike and see what cable it is that runs to the controller. Order a new one to change the gender of the connector at the display end and try a different UART display. See what happens, if that doesn't work, then I'll suss out a plan b.

Yup, they moved on from reliable to feature packed, in 5 years time every ebike will be in limp mode
I mean, you do not need to replace the controller or a display on a decent e-bike. You do not need to run around it with a multimetre, either :D
What do you expect from a 1,399.99 £ e-bike?

Why not try this...
Take the gender adapter cable (Male-Male) and cut and spice it back together matching Pin to Function. Keep in mind that the PIN number system is also proprietary on your bike and different than typical.
Probably best to draw it out before starting.

Yer, I'm not going to change the controller, just the cable that runs to the display to change the gender so I can fit a new display that will work better for me. Also, £1400 is a lot of money to me.

Yes, that did cross my mind to try, however I'm going to see if changing the cable works first, think that'll be the easier option. Plan B will then to try that. You've been a great help by the way, given me some good pointers to investigate, thank you,
