Bosch Kiox : Obsolete Already?

I have the beginnings of a sneaking suspicion that Bosch have chosen to use a deprecated USB Micro-A connector in their new Kiox display.

In computing jargon deprecated means 'usable but regarded as obsolete and, therefore, best avoided'.

Is this to thwart end users from plugging anything into the Kiox? Surely, that is the opposite from what most of us assumed.

I stumbled across this yesterday when I innocently stopped off at a specialist computer connector store to pick up a short cable to link my smartphone to the Kiox. I was in for a surprise: 'Never seen that sort of USB! Is that (pointing to the Kiox) really old?'

Someone, please tell me that I'm mistaken in thinking that it is going to be near-impossible to keep a smartphone charged by connecting it to a Kiox.

Not sure if this helps but, according to the Kiox and Intuvia manuals, they seem to both use the same USB port and both mention using a "Micro A-Micro B USB charging cable” to power external devices so it appears Bosch didn’t change anything on that front.

I have the same Ortlieb front bag as you with the optional iPhone clear waterproof holder sitting on top of the bag. The cable is long enough to go from the intuvia to the bag top. If you want to store your phone in the bag get an extension cable b

I was in for a surprise: 'Haven't seen one of those in ages, mate! Is that (pointing to the Kiox) real old?'

Someone, please tell me that I'm mistaken. A photo showing a Kiox physically connected by USB to a smartphone would suffice (not from Bosch reps or agents, please).

I like German engineering but it is typical of them. Sometimes they use something that nobody else uses. I mean I had to look up to see what a USB micro A looks like.

• Diongi, thanks for the Amazon link. I can see no reference in it to Micro-A, just Micro which almost always means Micro-B.
• Is the USB connector socket in the Intuvia Micro-A (with 4 square corners) or Micro-B (2 square & 2 chamfered corners)?
• Another thought: Can a Micro-B cable plug into a Micro-A socket?

I don't know but Amazon may also sell a straight micro-B to USB female adapter but I only looked for 20secs.

Weird! as both the Intuvia and the Nyon use the newer (but still dated) USB-Micro-B connector. I have ordered my 2019 Homage with the Intuvia as I intend to replace it with the Nyon anyway. I can say that the amount of power available from the port on both the Nyon or the Intuvia is pathetic and not even sufficient to keep up with always on display and active mapping on my anasdroid phone, especially if I have the brightness all the way up which is really needed for the darn thing to be seen. I have a case with a built in battery that doubles the battery for my phone. It makes the phone twice as thick but needs no cables.

The intuvia has a micro-AB receptacle,that looks like a micro A receptor, accommodating both micro A and micro B. The system detects the different #5 pin function. The cable from Amazon charges my iPhone from the intuvia usb receptor.

We have tried an after market cable purchased online on an Intuvia and nothing.

We then tried an original Bosch cable and it worked when wanting to charge a bike light.

You just need to be aware that the output voltage on the Intuvia is 5V and a max current of 500mA so it will not charge most newer smartphones as they require significantly more power to charge up.

The new Bosch Kiox display has a higher output at 5V and a max current of 1000mA.
