New ebikes sold by shared scooter rental company Bird, come in diamond frame and step-through versions, 500w Bafang rear geared hub motor, 36v 12.8ah battery, Class 2, single-speed, and belt drive. The diamond-frame looks similar to a Wing Freedom or VanMoof S3.

The single speed idea will not work, at least not very well. The motors will burn up especially with the throttle. If you have a stake in this company now is a good time to sell before people start demanding refunds.

Would've been a solid effort with hydraulic disc brakes, class 3 speeds, and multiple gears.

But it lacks those, so nope, not at all. Bird is trying to cash in on their name, but I'm not sure anyone cares.

well it depends on how someone rides it. I see a ton of single speeds here in Portland and we have all kids of shallow to steep roads. but it limits who would ride it.

I suspect it was designed by a focus group of people who do not know better. People who do not know better will launch with the throttle open, try to take long hills with full throttle and will run the battery all the way down to zero. With PAS they will lug it and ghost pedal. Then they will want to blame the manufacturer when it fails.

You mean designed 'for' a focus group...

I meant 'by' but 'for' also works with the feedback loop.

Bird knows its bike isnt price competitive. Just like it's personal scooters aren't. They're just using their brand to sell it at a premium. That's why I say they are designed for the ignorant, not by them.

Eventually they'll go on sale for $1500 or whatever.

I spoke to a Bird rep at my County Fair’s ebike petting zoo this morning, he said they will sell the Bird bikes online and in big box stores including Target and Best Buy

I will bet they showed people mid-drive gates with rohloffs. Then asked them how much they would spend for one. The belt was all that remained at that price point to give it that look.
