Big Specialized price increase

Just noticed that as of this week, there's a big price increase on all Specialized ebikes. (Probably it's all bikes. I only looked at ebikes) I had decided to upgrade from my Vado in March. I would have done it earlier, but I didn't want to buy a new bike in the middle of New England winter. The bikes I was looking at were at the upper end of what I could afford, but now that's not attainable anymore. Oh well, snooze, you lose.

Yah, that's crazy!

I think that Levo Comps have gone from $6000 last March to $7500 right now. I'm suddenly very happy with my Vado 4 and won't be selling it.

Thanks Stefan Mikes! Stay safe my friend!

This is from a similar thread on the EMTB Forum.
'21 Turbo Levo (base) was marked up by $500 ($5000, to $5500)
'21 Turbo Levo Comp was marked up by $1200 ($6300, to $7500)
'21 Turbo Levo Expert was marked up by $1600 ($8900, to $10500)

'21 Turbo Levo SL Comp was marked up by $500 ($6500, to $7000)
'21 Turbo Levo SL Comp Carbon was marked up by $500 ($7500 to $8000)

I was looking at either a Levo or a Creo. The baseline Creo jumped from $5000 to $6000 overnight. That's a big jump!

From what I can see Trek hasn't raised prices yet, but I haven't checked every bike.

The Giant Trance XE + Pro 29 (2) I was eyeing jumped $300 Cdn literally overnight as well as the other Trance versions. My brother- in-law who was shopping around for a Vado 5 SL EQ waited a bit too long before the price on that model increased by $400 Cdn.

Before the pandemic hit I test rode a Specialized Turbo Creo SL Comp E5 (aluminum version) and it was $6,000 Can
A while back the price increased to $6,300 and the price just increased to $6,789 Can.
It's not just ebikes. The price of everything is rising at an alarming rate.

It is interesting that the price difference between the comparable 2020 Trance E+ Pro and 2021 Trance X E+ Pro 29 is huge. You might say Giant made an impressive improvement. I would say that Giant hid a dramatic price increase behind replacing the excellent 2020 27.5er with the new 29er.

I noticed over the past few weeks that I was no longer seeing prices when browsing Vado SL models. Guess they were getting ready to make the change. The current prices are higher, but I do not recall the exact previous prices, might be around $250 higher than before for either the 5.0 or 5.0 EQ models.

Yeah the SL 4.0 EQ went up $250, from 3.5 to 3.75k.

All bike brands know they have pretty strong pricing power for the next 6-12 months due to bike shortages. So either they sell out quickly at old prices or sell a little slower at new ones. And even a small increase in price can noticeably increase profit.

I think the novelty of ebikes and the tech in each model gives brands more leeway to opportunistically raise prices, in a way they couldn't with a middle of the road manual bike. And then when ebike prices come down in 2022, it will be 'look at how fast technology is progressing and cutting costs!'

Gotta "absorb" those "stimulus" checks( "Greed has no limit or excuse", from the "Book of Plata)- sit on your hands Folks, prices will come down if we do not play the game.( I have drooled over some "Specialised" bikes too, simply cannot afford and the semi-local dealer said no negotiation on prices

A bike shop owner did a YouTube video about the Specialized bike price increase on Feb 1. He discussed it from a bike store's perspective and how it's going to make it be much harder for him to sell their bikes now. Specialized bikes already were expensive and many of them are consistently out of stock with long wait times. The price increase also puts bike shops in a hard spot. Anyway, I thought it was interesting and am passing it on.

Ah so it's not just ebikes.

I strongly doubt their costs increased, because the increase happened on existing year models.

Specialized is a very high visibility, high volume brand, and they may be banking on other brands copying their price increases to raise profit margins industry wide. Airlines are notorious for doing this constantly (raise a price on tickets, see if rivals copy it, and if they don't, bring the price back down), but it's much easier to get away with for plane tickets.

That aside, they're gunning for maximum short term profit. I think it'll hurt them more with dealers than customers.

Right. And Specialized depends on their dealers more than most. They really aren't set up to deal with individual customers.

Today I went down to my small town, New Hampshire LBS and bought a 2021 base model Levo for the old price of $5000. They told me that for any bike that they had in stock they weren't going to raise the prices. Any new bikes that have to be ordered will have the new prices. I had my sights on a Levo Comp, but they didn't have one of those in stock in my size, so I went with the base model Levo.

These folks have a fair number of Specialized and Trek in bikes and ebikes in stock. Today, I remember seeing a random selection (meaning not every size and style) of Como's, Vado's & Vado SL's. I saw a Levo SL Comp - large, a base model Creo - small, a Creo SL Comp Carbon EVO - medium. That's all that I remember. Because it's winter here and ski season, they're focusing on skis right now, not bikes. They said that they have more new bikes in storage that haven't been built yet. (I think he said there's no more Levo's or Creo's in stock and unbuilt though?) All of these bikes have Jan 31 pricing.

If anyone is looking for a Specialized bike or ebike and is willing to drive to New Hampshire, reach out to me individually and I'll tell you where to find these folks.

Anyway, I thought all was lost in my new bike quest, but somehow it worked out!
