Bafang PAS 5 levels vs 9

I am a new owner with a Bafang BBS02 with DCP 18. I just tweaked the settings more to my liking. My question is why is pedal assist 1 in the PAS 5 setting provide more power than pedal assist 1 in the PAS 9 setting? I thought pedal assist 1 would be the same in either the 5 setting or 9. I might add it was the same thing even with the factory settings. Thank you!

Minutia. Both are OK! Try both and then decide what fits for you!

Are you comparing results obtained comparing ECO and Sport mode settings?

No. I am using the version of DCP 18 that allows you to program 9 levels of assist. From there On the display you can select whether you want to run it in 5 levels or 9. The way it should work regardless of what levels you select to operate the bike in (5 or 9) the settings in power assist 1 should be the same. And for some strange reason it's not working that way. 1 has significantly more power when running in 5 than 9. Hopefully this makes sense :)

We really can't say much of anything since we have no idea how that motor is programmed. Really, the 1-5 settings should be more powerful since they take a 20% bite of the 100% pie vs just over 11%. However PAS programming in the BBSxx family is neither intuitive or linear. Especially given the fact that sellers could go in and add their own flavors into the mix.

Speaking of which...

EDIT: I may be wrong about this but I think a 5-setting system uses levels 1, 3, 5, 7 and 9 in the Assist table. So again... broader brush strokes could equal a higher threshold in each level?

EDITEDIT: @TampaJR you say you have the DPC18 that allows you to program 9 levels of assist. Thats not correct. What it does is let you access the 9 levels of assist that are present in the Assist table, vs. just using 5 of them (well... 6 as both 5 and 9 use Level 0 as well). Your display is just a window into a much larger world. See the article I posted above for the actual settings screens that your DPC18 is tapping into.

Follow the lead set above 😉
If you have a BBS*... a programming cable and making controller tweaks are a must.
I have a thread in the Bafang forum if you want the BBSO2B to be a gentle assistant for the older exercise rider.

Thanks so much! I appreciate you responding to my question.

Yes I'm pretty familiar with the programming of the controller. I used the speed app on my Android phone today. And I do understand that the display he's just the window into those settings in the controller. Thank you for the input!

I bought one of those old ERAD bikes by Chris somebody from 2015, of course they have been out of business a long time according to internet. I took it for a ride still nice. But the throttle will go in PAS0 and in gear 1 the throttle wheelies the bike hard, its a 750 motor. My question and I have looked on the internet and cant find it. Why does it have only 5 PAS and not 9. If I go into the software am I able to see how they have it programmed with out messing it up? Do you think there are better program settings out there now? I saw a youtube video from 2015 where they "brag" for a lack of a better word about there program settings.

As a side note they built good batteries, battery acts like it is new after 7+ years.

Your display ought to have 3, 5, and 9 options.

I'm not at all familiar with "old ERAD bikes by Chris", so I'll add to the should have 3 5 and 9 options thought with IF it's actually a BAFANG display....

I have nine PAS set on my Cyrusher Kommoda. One and two are basically useless but the remaining 7 give me a wide selection.

Erad just relabeled their BBSxx series. And threw in a bunch of smoke and mirrors. BTW Chris Head wasn’t the owner it was LeGrand. They sold some decent conversions. But there were failures. I think it was Giant full suspension bikes that couldn’t hold up to the torque of the BBSHD.

APT makes displays for others, not just Bafang and optional PAS settings aren’t limited to Bafang motors.

Thanks, that never would have occurred to me....

As mentioned, I had no idea what an "ERAD" was....

TampalJR.........please can you just clarify for me, does your controller have the eco/sport function?
