Allant +7s or +8

I have narrowed my bike search down to a Trek Allant +7s or +8. I like the fact that the +7 weighs a little less sine we will be loading our bikes up to travel with them. I also think I like the rack a little better on the +7. But, it seems like the shifters may be a little bit smoother on the +8. Does anyone have any experience with these two bikes they can share that would help me decide? Any help would be greatly appreciated. I have already learned a lot from reading the forum.

I can comment on the +7 if you have specific questions. The +7 has the Performance Line CX which, IMHO, is one of the best motors out there. Bosch has just released a firmware update that adds EMTB mode to the CX and takes it from 75Nm to 85 Nm. Also remember that a +7s is a class 3 (28mph) bike which may be restricted on certain trails. I am really enjoying it and the suspension fork helps me for sure!

Do most of the problems on trails come up because the cyclist is going over 20 mph on the trail or doing something to draw attention to themselves? Our LBS said it wouldn’t be a problem if you are casually riding like everyone else. It still makes me a little nervous about it though.

Does anyone know if the firmware update has been issued to go to 85 Newton meters on the Bosch 2020 cx and speed motors?

yes Dallant answered this, I have a Allant+ 8S with the new update and its great. I test rode both the 7S and the 8S and ultimately went with the 8S because i was able to connect my phone to the Cobi app. Only downfall is that depending on what phone you have it may fly out but it may get saved if you charge your phone while you ride. Other than that I am loving the bike.

I just got my Allant+ 8s firmware update!
The bike was quick and powerful before this motor update....But now you can feel the xtra boost! No increase in the maximum assisted 28 mph but you get there a little quicker and can hold it a bit easier. Very happy with this new found power.

Yours is a 2020 PL Speed? Maybe the 1.1.0.0 is the CX updated version number?

Certainly you've got more acceleration and hill climbing capability. One of my e-bikes is an 80 Nm, and the other 90 Nm, and I really appreciate that.

the PL speed and CX have same version 1.1.0.0

although different I don’t think it will make or break the bike so I don’t think I will be in a rush to get it updated as the bike works perfectly fine as is.

To the OP: the choice between the Allant+ 7 and 8 really comes down to your personal preferences, what type of riding you plan on doing, and your budget expectations. I own a 7s but have also ridden the 8s on a couple of test rides.

The primary differences between the 7s and the 8s are:

  • 500 Wh battery(7s) vs 625 Wh battery(8s)
  • Mobie 25 suspension fork(7s) vs. AL rigid blade fork(8s)
  • Shimano Alivio 11-36t 9-spd(7s) vs Shimano Deore 11-42t 10-spd(8s)
  • Purion display(7s) vs Smartphone Hub display(8s)
  • Herrmans/AXA lights(7s) vs. Trek Lync lights(8s)
  • Racktime Lightit rear rack(7s)vs. Lowrider (panniers only) rear rack(8s)
  • Schwalbe G-One tires(7s) vs. Bontrager E6 tires(8s)
  • Price

If, as your original post indicates, you are considering the 7s (Bosch Performance Line Speed, 28mph) versus the 8 (Bosch Performance Line CX, 20mph) there are additional differences to consider. First and foremost you should ask yourself if you want/need the additional speed support (20mph vs 28mph). Do you regularly exceed 20mph on an analog bike ride? On steeper uphill sections both motors will be the same since you won't be riding over 20mph uphill.

The primary differences between the 7s (28mph PL Speed) and the 8 (20mph PL CX) are:

  • Bosch Performance Line Speed, 28mph (7s) vs. Bosch Performance Line CX, 20mph (8)
  • Shimano MT520 4-piston hydraulic disc brakes (7s) vs Shimano MT200 hydraulic disc brakes (8)
  • Mobie 25 suspension fork(7s) vs. AL rigid blade fork(8)
  • Shimano Alivio 11-36t 9-spd(7s) vs Shimano Deore 11-42t 10-spd(8)
  • Purion display(7s) vs Smartphone Hub display(8)
  • Herrmans/AXA lights(7s) vs. Trek Lync lights(8)
  • Racktime Lightit rear rack(7s)vs. Lowrider (panniers only) rear rack(8)
  • Schwalbe G-One tires(7s) vs. Bontrager E6 tires(8)
  • Price (but only slight difference ~$100)

For me, I was only considering class 3 (28 mph) because I preferred the option of having the additional speed when I need it (on roads I frequently ride above 20mph and wanted the motor to support). You can, of course, ride above 20mph with the PL CX motor, but the motor will not be helping you at those speeds and it will be a lot of work (unless you are going downhill). I also really love the MT520 4-piston hydraulic disc brakes that are on the Speed models (both 7s and 8s), but both sets of brake models (mt520 and mt200) are well matched to the bike and should have no problem stopping you. I liked both the 7s and 8s. If I had unlimited budget I probably would have gone with the 8s, but the 7s met all of my criteria and I am very happy with the bike.

I wouldn't worry about the 3lb weight difference between the bikes. That is negligible in my opinion.

I ended up with the Allant +8. It is a great bike! it is comfortable (even the seat), handles well, and seems to have good battery life. I primarily ride on paved bike trails with a lot of hills. The bike handles the hills nicely. Highly recommend the Allant +8.

Nice !! Congrats on the new bike!!! One recommendation I would say that I really enjoy is try to get a suspension seat post!! Will give you a more comfy ride in the long run.

Also the 7 has plastic fenders while the 8 has very sturdy and stable alloy fenders integrated with the rack that never rattle or need adjustment ( my 9.9 has the same ones) I absolutely love riding my 9.9 but it does cost more. To get carbon fiber frame and 12 speed tranny is totally worth it. The compliance, comfort and quiet ride on carbon fiber version are very noticeable. Ultimately you can't go wrong no matter which one you choose.
