Advice on Canyon Grail: ON

Hi guys,
I am a new member here and I am seeking an advice from the experienced guys like you are. I would like to buy Grail:ON CF 8 eTap Canyon bicycle. Because after so many years riding I need some help now in my old age. I would like to know if this bike can be unlocked or adjusted to achieve class 3 performance. Class 3 e bikes are legal in California. In another words max speed would be 28mph instead of only 20mph. I would be using it mainly on the road and only occasionally on trails

I have the same motor on my ebike (Bosch gen 4 motor) and I've done some research into de-restricting the motor. There are a number of products on the market that will work, but many of them can cause the Bosch system to go into 'error' mode over time. The third time your motor goes into 'error' mode you will have to take it to a Bosch dealer to get it to run again and if the dealer can detect that you've installed the device your warranty will be null and void.

I do plan on de-restricting my motor, but I'm going to wait until the warranty is over. Here's one of the de-restrictors that looks promising: https://epicebikes.com.au/product-category/bosch-unlocks/

Thanks very much for your inside. I just learned that it might be possible to adjust it from the bike‘s own computer without a chip???

Just ordered the Grail On 8. Supposed to be class 3 according to the web site. Having a hard time with the 8% and up hills around here and the high winds in Texas. Spent quite a bit of time in research. This seems to be the answer I was after for power, endurance and weight. Was tempted by fauza system but I think I would like a little more power and endurance.
 
You're gonna love it. I usually use the lowest setting (ECO) and rarely do I use TOUR and SPORT. I've never used TURBO - lol.

The power is almost too much and I sometimes spin the wheels. BE CAREFUL. No kidding.

You will not be disappointed! I ride up 7-8% hills at 14-17 mph in touring mode. 12 mile climb takes me less than an hour. Same climb on a regular road bike about 1hr 30 minute. I love my Grail on. I even bought 2nd battery so I can go further

Hey, where did you get the second battery?
 
Hopefully here in the US more bikes will be bumped up to the legal 28 mph straight from the factory with Warranty and all!

Did you replace the gravel tires for pavement?
 
Ill jump in here. I acquired a new Grail:ON Cf ETAP 3 weeks ago. It does everything it says. I thought eletronic shifting would be pointless in a 1x system, but it works flawlessly. I changed the 50mm gravel G-one wheels to 38 mm Panaracer Gravelking (slick tread) tubeless and the tubeless setup worked fine - a bit difficult to set the bead using a compressor, I had to use CO2 inflator. My preferred tire is the GS 5000 but the max width is 32 MM and the rim ID is 24 mm, implying the tire needs to be 35 MM or greater. It would be nice to know if 32 mm tires would work with these wide rims. The Downside to installing thinner tires is that the bike thinks you are going faster than you actualy are and cuts the motor off at 25.5 mph. You cannot adjust the wheel size input on the computer- you have to take it to a Bosch dealer for them to do this. Just imagine how much your LBS wants to service a bike you bought on the internet!- I cannot find anybody who will do it in the bay area. The wheels are marvelous - alone the carbon wheelset costs over $2500. I bought a second battery from REI 20% off during their annual sale going on through 5/31. I can get 40-50 miles on a battery, and I am big rider (220lb). My only complaint is the motor whine is significant. Others comment on it. I used to ride a BROSE motor which was nearly silent. I do like the way the bosch applies power, but it does not feels as natural as the brose. If you increase cadence the power output will increase even if you dont increase the pressure on the pedals. For an ebike it is amazingly light and it is the only ebike I can actually ride with the motor OFF. Handling is phenomenal - I carved turns down Mt Hamilton (very curvy 4000ft mountain descent) with astonishing control. Big Ebike grin after every ride.

Good info, thanks. Looks like I may be buying another battery too if I only get 40 to 50 miles. Still looking for some good road tires. Panaracer says no stock on their slick tread. Bike is scheduled for delivery next week. Anticipation is high.
 
I rode up Mt Hamilton via Quimby yesterday 33 miles 4900 vertical, 18% grade at the steepest! Rode in Turbo mode the whole way. Battery completely drained at 28 miles but I was delighted with the range considering 260 lb rider+bike going up 5000' at 10-15 MPH. I had a second battery in the seat bag I pulled out for the last 5 miles. I could have easily made it on one battery riding in Sport mode. I was right in between a M and L, and went M as per their advice. I wish I had gone L, but I bought an outlet bike at a discount so I cannot return it. I am getting used to a nimble playful ride, albeit less comfortable and less stable over 40 mph, and spent the savings on an extra battery. I do like that they use the standard Bosch powertube which can be purchased from numerous sources (including REI) instead of being limited to a proprietary battery like the Trek or Raleigh (or most others!)

Is the battery a vertical or horizontal model for the grailon
