In memory of my brother who passed a year ago today!

Today was a special ride to remember my big brother, taking in some of his favourite places to visit in Scotland! He was never really into cycling as hill walking was his passion, he climbed over 200 of the 282 munros (mountains over 3000ft) in Scotland and I'm certain he would have completed all of them if his health hadn't taken a big downturn... :( It was another blustery day, I don't usually do 100 milers when the wind is really strong but as it was from the SW it was perfect for the ride I had in mind! 54 miles with a 30-35mph tailwind was a lot of fun but I knew the fun would end when I turned at Burntisland!

I made my way down to Falkirk, enjoying the awesome descent down into Glen Village again with a top speed of just over 45mph! My brother was a speed freak so I guess he passed it to me, in his case it was fast motorbikes! 😂I then headed north through Grangemouth where I stopped for a couple of photos at the River Carron!

Looking west with the Kelpies dominating the view!

Looking east!

1776363536194.jpeg

I then made my way to Kincardine Bridge and headed east on the A907 before taking the back road that joins the Forestmill to Saline road, its such a great little road that runs for almost 2 miles and I didn't see a single car! I was now heading east towards Saline and stopped for a couple of photos of the Ochil Hills!

The road into Saline is very nice!

1776363844615.jpeg

1776363858792.jpeg

I now had a tough 2.5 mile climb up through Saline and Steelend, this is the final climb!

1776363916070.jpeg

After the climb the road flattens and I was flying along with that strong tailwind, eventually there was a gradual downhill and I was nudging 40mph! I was now heading for Kelty and was looking forward to the descent into the town, for those who think I never have any cars in my photos...😂 Loch Leven can be seen in the distance!

1776364132449.jpeg

From Kelty I turned south towards Crossgates and was now battling the wind for a few miles, I had this big climb to tackle shortly! I recently descended it at well over 40mph, today it was a different story...;)

1776364300850.jpeg

At Crossgates I turned east and joined the B925 towards Mossmorran, then SE to Burntisland with some awesome descents! Some big climbs thrown in also...

1776364646719.jpeg

Stenhouse Reservoir!

1776364674418.jpeg

Then the final big descent into Burntisland, over 40 mph all the way down with a stunning view of the Firth of Forth to enjoy! I switched batteries here at 52 miles, my 8 year old battery is still going strong!

1776364717362.jpeg

1776364774073.jpeg

From Burntisland it was time to turn west towards Aberdour on the A921 and battle the strong headwind and a huge climb for a couple of miles! I stopped before the big descent into Aberdour for some photos looking across the Forth!

That 16% descent was awaiting me!

1776364976778.jpeg

The Pentland Hills to the south with a plane heading into Edinburgh Airport, I never even spotted the plane when I was taking the photo! 😂

1776365064967.jpeg

The Forth Bridges, it was too windy to cross today...

1776365127446.jpeg

I then shot down the descent into Aberdour, my brother loved the village and when he had his camper van it was one of the places he often parked up for the weekend! I continued on the A921 to Inverkeithing where I stopped for lunch! I decided to head south after lunch towards the Forth bridges to get a couple of photos and there was a massive crosswind on the approach road! It would have been scary up on the bridge!

The Queensferry Crossing which is the newest bridge!

1776366279689.jpeg

1776366290669.jpeg

I then headed north for Rosyth where I turned west and joined the busy A985 for a few miles, thankfully there are a few cycle paths along the way so I used them to avoid the trucks! I rejoined the main road at Crombie but only for a mile before taking the coast road to Torryburn, a much quieter and fun road with some lovely descents! From Torryburn I passed through Newmills and Low Valleyfield before arriving in the lovely village of Culross (pronounced Cooross) and stopped for a short break and a snack! This was another of my brothers favourite places to visit and I remember him putting me right about the pronunciation! 🤣 I just love this road and its in such great condition!

1776367173359.jpeg

I was now approaching the Kincardine Bridge again, using the awesome cycle path that leads to the bridge! After crossing I had a very nice view of the Ochils across the Clackmannanshire Bridge!

1776367290742.jpeg

I then headed SW towards Carronshore and was forced to head west towards Camelon thanks to a road closure, it actually worked in my favour as I decided to take the cycle path which leads to the Falkirk Wheel!

1776367451288.jpeg

I was so unlucky here as I had just missed the wheel in action when this narrowboat passed through the lock!

1776367519566.jpeg

1776367533843.jpeg

I then used the excellent canal path to Bonnybridge where I switched to battery 3 at 87 miles, only 32 miles from my second battery but given the wind and the climbs it did very well!

1776367576671.jpeg

1776367587598.jpeg

This looked like fun!

1776367625191.jpeg

From Bonnybridge I made my way to Castlecary, its not a very nice road as its badly needing resurfaced! I had a plan though to take the awesome Arns road, a cracking little back road with no traffic! It starts with a big climb but is followed by some beautiful twisty descents! The climb was made easy thanks to assist level 3, having an almost full battery for the final 18 miles was a real bonus! :DThe final miles passed in no time and I arrived home buzzing from a brilliant day of cycling, I'm sure my brother was turning the pedals with me! My next ride might be Sunday, I'm hoping to cycle to Knockhill for the first round of the Scottish Championship car racing!

Lots of 'I have to ride that path' shots there.
How quick a year goes by.

The ride started right next to this burly tree in Lower Kinnerton
buc1.jpg

A bridleway sign followed by Private no public right of way, a sneaky bit of legal cherry picking to put people off
buc2.jpg

I appreciate the desire to reduce strangers riding straight through your courtyard, but if I had a bell I would have rung it.
buc3.jpg

This bridleway is unmarked
buc4.jpg

The next one had a brand new sign.
buc5.jpg

They are such a delight to ride on a sunny day.
buc6.jpg

Again poping out through someones driveway
buc7.jpg

Constantly picking sticks out of the spokes
buc8.jpg

Not the car for introverts
buc9.jpg

Had abuse and horn blowing by a truck driver annoyed we were in his way, I pointed my gopro right at his face and shouted 'got ya', it wasnt turned on but he doesnt know that,
buc10.jpg

The enclosed hedging gives a heightened feeling of speed.
buc11.jpg

Went down a long passageway to find it blocked at the end.
buc12.jpg

Ended up on a footpath by sheer incompetence, I slammed my shoulder into a tree, one of those impacts that make you squeal involuntary.
buc13.jpg

Ewloe Castle remains, built by the Welsh to celebrate a victory over the English.
buc14.jpg

Its hard to get a picture of the whole thing, its covered in tress, but makes for a very atmospheric visit.
buc15.jpg

Hawarden is very old and stylish.
buc17.jpg

The entrance to the castle park is on the high street
buc18.jpg

It was closed and I could only get this turret from outside the wall, the park is absolutely superb
buc19.jpg

Can you spot the vicious guard dog?
buc20.jpg

This is the Airbus factory, in front of the middle building is one of the two Beluga transporter planes.

Twin, where are you located? Central MA has been done with accumulating snow for a few weeks now.

Twin, where are you located? Central MA has been done with accumulating snow for a few weeks now.
We are located in southern Alberta about a 2 hr drive north of central Montana. After spending several weeks in the Algarve region of Portugal and sitting on the beach with all the other seniors from about the world we kind of were hoping for the April showers and May flowers thing. And my Levo is sitting in the garage with an all new drive train ready to tackle some trails and the stationary bike just doesn't cut it no matter how loud I turn up the Goldie oldies. Oh well, I get to see pictures of all the interesting rides folks are taking on this biking site and keeps me motivated for when our turn comes again.

That photo brings back fond memories of our Denver days. March and early April were the snowiest time of year there.

In contrast, our March-April here in coastal SoCal has so far been warmer than most summers.
Im pleased everyone missed my grey joke after announcing I was running my phone display in greyscale.
