2025 - Our Rides in Words, Photos, Maps and Videos

My friend took this photo in Warsaw this morning. He cannot identify the tree, either :) (He thinks it could be the Japanese cherry).

Im off to Devon for a week, my auntie has now popped her clogs.
She was a lovely woman and sharp as a button, luckily it was without pain or drama.
Her claim to fame is she was in John Lennons art class and dated the 5th Beatle who died of a brain tumour, which was what took her out.

Utterly timeless, she was 82 in this picture.

Im not taking the bike, taking the mother instead, wish me luck 😂

This gorgeous little village called Ince is just half a mile from Britains second largest oil refinery.

When it was built oil came from whales

And we were scrapping Europe in snazzy boots.

Nice view, ignoring the couple snogging to my right

Just finished it before the traitors ran off with a country.

The feeling of neighbourly comfort or claustraphobia?

This is down the road in the posh little town of Frodsham

24 miles
Elevation..460ft, felt like 2000.

Hey, Chris… What bike were you using for that ride? Yeah, that rock path does look gnarly… Don’t want to go down on that and end up rolling down the cliff!!!

So, after 6 straight days of cycling, I took a break today. I know this picture might seem unrelated to what we do here, but it’s relevant and so I thought you guys might enjoy.

This afternoon a friend came over who is going to buy a guitar, and I broke out part of the collection to talk about the process, guitar construction, and review his options… As an avocation, I have been collecting guitars for about 25 years now and I’ve amassed a good bit of knowledge about them. My objective was to give him a crash course on what to look for, etc. Anyway, the same kind of passion overtakes me when talking about my guitars that I feel about my biking… So, here’s a gratuitous picture of the aftermath of me breaking out most of the 6 strings and a couple of the 12 strings to talk about with my friend. I must seem like a blathering idiot when I get the chance to do this kind of thing.

Oh, and one more piece of relevance… See the cord going into the fireplace?? Anyone want to guess what that’s all about?

Lovely indeed!
Methinks you're charging the eSteed?

River Wkra And Her Tributaries: Northerly Mazovia

Mazovian Voivodeship is the largest province of Poland. I realized I didn't explore a big part of it yet. At the first convenient occasion (and a favourable wind direction), I rode a train to the northerly (but by no means "northern") part of the area. I was interested to follow River Wkra (v-kruh) and her tributaries (rivers are feminine in Polish).

(Click to see a bigger map). In terms of area and population, Mazovia is approximately half of the entire Czech Republic! Mazovia is also half of area of Lithuania but there are two times as many Mazovians as the citizens of Lithuania!

Nothing to complain on about the trains. Only the trip from Warsaw to Ciechanów (upon Łydynia) was almost two hours long!

My mate Krzysiek joined me on the train. Again, he rode a vintage road bike on (effectively) 30 mm tyres.

In Ciechanów, we passed a steam locomotive...

...and an interesting water tower.

This time, Krzysiek was very fast on asphalt. I went 80% assistance (Vado SL) and clicked the speed derestrictor. 20 km into the ride, the first Range Extender was already depleted! I stopped and said 'Krzysiek, I'm not a match for you today. I'm weak. What are we doing about that?' We decided I (as the navigator) would take the lead for the rest of the ride.

While Krzysiek could ride fast on good asphalt, my Vado SL was excellent for gravel and cracked tarmac. Here, the only 100 m long patch of sand on our route.

On a historical wooden bridge over River Wkra. The river is not big in
her northern part.

57 km into the ride; Nowe Miasto (New Town) upon Sona. After we bought refreshments and coffee in a convenience store, I asked Krzysiek: 'Mate, can you navigate yourself to Warsaw? I love to ride with you but am terribly tired and need a long long rest here!' to which he agreed and we parted our ways. Necessary to mention, my mate is using paper maps to navigate!

Small river Sona looked beautifully but I couldn't photograph it properly!

While the central and southern Mazovia is flat and rather boring, the northerly part is undulated and nice.

River Wkra is a way bigger in her southern course. It is big for the kayaking business! (I could kayak on Wkra in recent years myself!)

The Race
As I was sitting on a bench near to the bridge, I checked the train timetable. Uh-oh. 17 km to go to the Nowy Dwór Mazowiecki (NDM) train station and an hour to catch the train at 16:17! If I missed that train, I would need to wait for another hour! I got up and at the ride restart it was only 56 minutes left; I had to replace a Range Extender en route as well!

I would probably be able to catch the train in NDM. However, unexpectedly, I met the Modlin train station on my route 4.6 km earlier! The airport train was waiting for me at 15:53... With a plenty of time to even cut a nap! :) (If any of you travels by Ryanair to Warsaw and take a shuttle bus then a train, you are guaranteed to make acquaintance with the Modlin station) :)

98 km for the day.
