2025 - Our Rides in Words, Photos, Maps and Videos

I rode 21 miles today. I went by this horse with a foal. It’s an Amish farm so some day it will be put to work. I also went by this solar farm that is new and not quite in service.

Its only a 15% increase in torque.
But I will put a monster sticker on the bike for you 🤣
Learn riding, friend :) The older Levo had as much as 565 W peak power at 90 Nm and it let a good rider make miracles. Now you are talking 750 W (+32%) or more.

Once, I made a 4 km long climb up a maximum grade of 19%, and my e-bike only had 520 W peak power or 85 Nm.

I knew youd bring up watts.🤪
There's nothing like torque alone**. A car engine could have a moderate torque figure but it rotates very fast, and is the outcome of a high engine power*. If you assume a constant cadence on different e-bikes then you'll notice only the power (a product of torque and rotational speed) is what matters.
------------
*) An example car is specified at 400 Nm torque. As it is achieved at 2000 rpm (209 rad/s), the engine has to provide 83.6 kW (112 hp) at the shaft. Car engines are specified by their power, still guessing why?
**) Similarly, the battery Ah without the voltage is of no meaning. It is Ah * V = Wh.

First day off in seven straight riding days. I’ve been a bit of an animal lately. Anyway, no ride pictures to show, but in lieu of that I did a lot of work on my lawn mower(s) with a friend over the weekend and now my lawn’s carpet status has been restored. Yeah, I know, it’s silly, but I love having a great lawn anyway. Papi certainly likes it. :)

Our weather this week is looking pretty dismal for the most part, today it was very windy once again but thankfully dry so I just had to get out! The wind was pretty much directly from the south and gusting at almost 40mph so I planned a route down to Muirkirk in Ayrshire which would be 40 miles mostly into the strong headwind! This would give me a lovely tailwind from Muirkirk to Strathaven and boy was it fun! :D I made my way down to Garrion Bridge in the Clyde Valley and then south down to Kirkmuirhill, stopping for photos when the opportunities came along!

At Kirkmuirhill I joined the awesome cycle path down to Lesmahagow!

1748894335559.jpeg

1748894349207.jpeg

I continued south towards Douglas, passing Douglas Water!

1748894461727.jpeg

The road out of Douglas is in great condition!

1748894497789.jpeg

I was now approaching Glespin, the awesome roads continued after passing through the village!

1748894554690.jpeg

I then passed Glenbuck Loch on my way to Muirkirk!

1748894636128.jpeg

The road is a bit rough here for a mile or so before smoothing out again!

1748894693324.jpeg

I arrived in Muirkirk at the 40 mile mark and my first battery was down to 19% as I was about to start up the climb so it was time to switch batteries and enjoy that lovely tailwind! I stoppaed part way up the climb for a couple of photos looking south!

1748895108320.jpeg

Not much sun today but the temp was a perfect 14C and no sign of rain, always a bonus! Another photo a little further up the climb!

1748895251771.jpeg

At the top of the climb I had roads like this to enjoy and they were downhill with a very strong tailwind pushing me hard!

1748895291674.jpeg

1748895303610.jpeg

Glengavel Reservoir then came into view!

1748895465464.jpeg

After passing the reservoir I had some really fast downhills for a good 8 miles, it was pure cycling heaven!😁Just before Strathaven I turned east towards Sandford, another great road and its well protected with lots of tree cover so the crosswinds weren't an issue! The road eventually leads back to Kirkmuirhill and from there I turned north towards Larkhall and joined the back road through Draffan and Netherburnwhich leads back to the Clyde Valley at Manse Brae!

Manse Brae almost looks flat in this photo, its anything but with a gradient around 18% but I was going down today and had to feather the brakes to keep my speed down!

1748896313600.jpeg

Back in the Clyde Valley I turned SE towards Rosebank and on to Crossford, grabbing many photos as I went!

1748896497292.jpeg

1748896510359.jpeg

At Crossford I crossed the bridge over the River Clyde, it was good to see the water flowing much better than recently after all the rain!

It was now time to tackle the beast of a climb up to Carluke, thankfully my second battery was doing well thanks to the tailwind! From Carluke I used the main road for a mile or so before taking the back road to Allanton where I headed up the climb to Hareshaw and then over the back roads to home! I arrived at dinner time with just over 87 miles covered, no way was I going to stop with less then 13 miles to go for another imperial century! So I had my dinner and grabbed my 3rd battery and did an 18 mile loop locally with a lot of big climbs and big descents on amazing roads!:D I wasn't intending to do a century ride today as I didn't start my ride until 11.30am, it just sort of happened!;) Another cracking ride, imperial century no 11 for the year already and my average is over 77 miles!

Had a lovely ride to Hale today, this is a picture postcard village in Liverpool next to the river and the John Lennon airport, yes our airport is named after a Beatle.
hale1.jpg

Its truly delicious, but there's one problem, the landing jets fly over it all day and scare the beejeezus out of you.
hale2.jpg

Its rammed with oddities and lots of 'I made my money, look at me and my house'
hale3.jpg

There's is a trail down to the river edge and an absolutely splendid trail along the coast past the airport that is quite challenging
hale4.jpg

What goes down must go up, and I had to carry the bike up these , they are much steeper than it looks with the wide angle lens.
hale5.jpg

Came around the corner and bumped into this guy, we talked for 45 minutes, he had just retired from Jaguar cars and had lost 8 stone after gastric surgery, he was on exactly
the same page as me, lived for his incredible dual hub Chinese malarkey thing.
1300 quid, 800wh, 2x1000W motors, I had a go on it, very heavy but the suspension felt really good and tbh the welds and brakes and wiring were all spot on.
He had sold his car, bought a van, stopped holidaying abroad and was just exploring England, he's aware it illegal and was going to convert it to pedal assist only and set the
speed to 15mph, hes very unfit and still overweight, but its released him into a new life.
hale6.jpg

Being a local he took he gave me a guided tour, and to show off his bike as well.
hale7.jpg

This is actually the landing lights gantry which reaches out into the river.
hale8.jpg

We are right at the waters edge here, this is the slip way for the Liverpool sailing club.
hale9.jpg

He showed me a path to the gorgeous 15th century Tudor Speke hall.
hale11.jpg

It was absolutely kept going by the slave trade and successive descendants used their profits from the transatlantic trade to upkeep and extend the property.
hale12.jpg

This inside courtyard is just magical in person
hale13.jpg

This guy is as posh and educated as he looks.
hale14.jpg

The windows are every shape possible except square
hale15.jpg

Riding back to the van I found this little hamlet of cute cottages, they have the airport landing lights in their gardens and a full size jet overhead every twenty minutes.
The whole day was a bit surreal, every conversation was interrupted by the scream of taking off or landing jets over the most unlikely scenery and houses.

I could have ridden the area all day and will probably go back.
