2025 - Our Rides in Words, Photos, Maps and Videos

An epic 5hr ride today with Brain, from Port Sunlight to the Manchester Ship canal.
It was only 17 miles but we noseyed into every single track, path, hole in fence, derelict building , finally making it to the canal pushing, lifting and sneaking around the perimeter fences of massive industrial complexes.

The day was further enriched by Brain declaring he had bought 75 grands worth of Tesla shares and we had to stop every 15 minutes to check the price.
It brought everything into context as he fought the thrill and the stress of sell or hold.
He sold in the van on the way home and netted 4200 quid, money makes money in the capital world.
I think Tesla is a share scheme that makes cars, it fluctuated between 2600 and 6800 profit.
It WILL end in tears.

A short recovery ride after Thursdays epic, my legs were still feeling it but thankfully I had a 30mph tailwind to start me off! It was pretty much a direct westerly so I made my way east to Dechmont where I turned north up Burnhouse Road, it was definitely a day for climbing it and not descending it at speed with a 30mph crosswind!

A couple of photos before I started up the climb!

Part way up I turned west so I missed out the steepest part of the climb!

1742841319899.jpeg

I was now battling a 30mph headwind which would continue for over 10 miles and the temp difference was very noticeable, not that it was cold though as it was around 12C! Its a narrow road this one but very smooth and no traffic to speak of for the most part!

The road ramps up after a couple of miles, this is near the top looking back down!

Its very undulating also, my type of road!

At the top I had this view of the Pentland Hills!

Then I had this descent with a mega crosswind so it was taken very gingerly...

After the descent I had a big climb but it was well protected by trees, eventually the road joins the main raod from Beecraigs to Torphicen! I stopped for a snack break and some photos here!

The Ochil Hills were looking amazing today!

I then enjoyed the descent down into Torphicen and on to Westfield, where I stopped for a photo of the viaduct!

I then headed down the quiet back road to Avonbridge, it starts with this huge descent which was taken slowly due to the crosswinds again!

The road to Avonbridge is great to ride, rising and falling and twisting and turning all the way!

At Avonbridge I headed north up the big climb to California, thankfully its treelined all the way up so no crosswinds here! I stopped for this photo before tackling the steepest part of the climb!

1742844972821.jpeg

Once in the village of California I had this amazing view of the Firth of Forth and Ochil Hills!

Then I had a nice descent immediately followed by a climb up into Shieldhill, where I turned west to take the back road to Slamannan where I got one last photo of the Ochils!

1742845176553.jpeg

From Slamannan I continued west to Greengairs and turned south over the back roads to home, I was pretty tired when I arrived after battling that 30mph headwind but I enjoyed the ride of course! It was a beautiful day, just a shame about that wind but it made the first 23 miles very enjoyable and my average speed was over 18mph at the half way point!

Rab, if you didnt have so much wind and so many hills you would have the perfect place to ride 😉

I was on the first Night BRIDGEs gravel ride this year.

1742853961126.png

The main ride and a quick return to the City Centre.

There were 14 of us including my brother and two guys I knew from before. Obviously, I was dropped on the first 200 metres of the ride :) I rode my Vado 6.0 at 40/40% assistance with bursts of TURBO when necessary. The cruising speed was moderate, around 23 km/h as I cannot see very well at night, especially off-road. I enjoyed the solo ride though. Even could catch an early return train!

As I was later riding in my neighbourhood, the temperature dropped to 0 C. At that moment I realised I forgot wearing long johns! :D (54.8 km at the end of the day).
