Don't even try to make sense of mid drive vs hub drive wattage until you ride a couple of bikes.
Most mids are rated 250 for legal reasons, not performance reasons, and both Trek and Specialized (Giant too?) 250w mids will peak at over 600w and outperform many 500w hubs. Plus with the power going through 8 to 10 speeds, they out perform 750s under many conditions, I'm told.

Previously had an eBike with a 500w geared rear hub motor. It was really fast on flat land. When it went up sustained hills, it would “run out of breath” due to the inefficiencies of the motor and thermal protection. I now have a 250w mid drive bike and while slower on flat land, it will destroy any hill that I point it at. It’s just a lot more efficient because it can use the rear gearing. It’s up to your riding style and riding environment for the type of motor works best for you. I live in a very hilly area so I’m never going to consider a hub drive again.
