hill climbing? 750W hub versus 250W mid drive

For those who have ridden up hills on both a hub and a mid drive, how do they compare in terms of how easy and quick they are to make it up the hill? I have a 750W geared rear hub with (IIRC) 90 Nm torque, and torque sensor at the crank. Thinking of getting a Bosch mid drive with 250W, 65 Nm...

ebike prices, some good deals recently

Are other folks noticing some good prices on ebikes lately? Especially on preowned ones? When I bought my ebike a year or so ago, it seemed like anything with a big-brand-name mid drive was at least $3,000. But I was in my LBS this week and they had a Scott Sub Active, which has the Bosch mid...

    Mackinac Island impounds ebikes

I found this article interesting. It details how authorities on Mackinac Island (Michigan resort island with no automobiles) are handling the ebike situation. Riders must obtain and pay for a special license, the ebike must be class 1 only (any throttle must be physically removed, not just...

    hydraulic front brake quit working

I have been dismounting my front wheel to transport my R1U LMTD in the back of the SUV. I transport it upright (on the front fork and the rear wheel). For several in-and-out trips this hasn't been a problem. But today when I pulled the ebike out of the SUV, I couldn't get the wheel back on...

Electric power usage on different PAS

I've been curious about energy usage in different PAS levels. Today I rode a particular gradual (but steady) incline twice, trying to maintain as close to exactly 10 mph as possible each time. The first run was in PAS 1 (set at 40% power), and the second run was in PAS 2 (set at 66% power)...

LMT'D handlebar ends- easy to remove?

I have a R1Up LMTD. I'm thinking I would like a mirror that attaches into the end of the handebar tube. Does anyone know if the piece that encloses the end of the handlebar is integral to the grip, or is it a separate piece that will pop out (or unscrew somehow)? TIA.

easy-rolling ebikes when unpowered (what brands)

This question is for those of you who have experienced multiple brands of ebikes. Do you find that certain brands stand out in terms of low rolling resistance and ease of pedaling when the ebike is not under motor assist? If so, will you please share which brands you have ridden in this way...

    Suntour fork maintenance

I looked up Suntour suspension forks out of curiosity. Decided to view the service requirements for their forks. Both air and spring forks say "Disassemble and rebuild" every 100 hours. On the air forks, the 80W oil is supposed to be changed every 50 hours. I've never owned a suspension...

What's the latest on Brose quality and local serviceability?

After reading through the Brose "known issues" thread, it seems as though most of the 'problem' posts are fairly old. I don't see many issues reported in 2021 or 2022. Does anyone know if Brose improved their design and reduced motor failure rates? (I imagine the failure rates were probably...

how do throttles and sensors function?

Some questions for you ebike owners, from an owner-to-be: On ebikes with a throttle, does it engage in a binary manner (either full-on or full-off), or does it add power incrementally like an automobile's accelerator pedal? Or are there some variations from brand to brand between these two...

Motor watt restrictions, anyone ever get stopped by LEO?

I found a website that describes the ebike motor wattage limits for the various states. Many states have a max of 750W, some (like IA, ID and AZ) say "less than" 750W, and a couple (MD and Montana) specify 500W max. Have any of you, or do you know anyone who has, been cited or warned by an...

Newb, debating ebike options for hills, trails

Hi, I'm a guy in his mid-60s thinking about buying an ebike or getting a used mountain bike that can be converted. I am getting to the age where I hope to soon have a lot more time to goof off! 😊 I like to travel with a trailer and camp, especially on national forest/blm land, and I always take...
