Brose motor repair

Hello, I have a Pedego City Commuter Mid Drive. Motor has developed a clicking, clacking sound that is getting worse. Pedego store where I bought the bike is closed - out of buisiness as are several others in the St. Louis area. Nearest Pedego store to me is several hours away. I have taken my bike to several LBS that sevice other ebikes with no success. The LBS have not been able to communicate with Pedego. Bike is less than 4 years old and should be under warrenty, but when I spoke to Pedege the technician said that a bad bearing was not a warrenty issue. Pedego sells a replacement motor but does not have any in stock and will not back order.

There is a person on Youtube who repairs ebke motors and demostrates how to remove the motor and ship it to him. Does any on this board have any experience with this? I have good mechanical skill and after watching his videos, I think I can remove the motor.

If your mechanical skills are good then you should have no problem removing your motor and sending it off. I believe eBike Motor Repair https://ebikemotorrepair.com/?v=0b3b97fa6688 is the US arm of Performance Line Bearings. Pete, the owner of Performance Line pretty much started the business of motor repair for various brands. He has many videos of these repairs up on his site and as well as on YouTube.

Being it's a Brose, have you talked to any Specialized bike shops around you? They've had Brose powering their ebikes for years now & it's possible they could look at your motor and make the repairs needed.

Specialized never repairs the motors. It replaces the broken motors.

Have you tried torquing down the pedal arms, replacing the pedals and finally tightening the motor mount screws?

I've found all kinds of noises from pedalling in my bikes were based on something loose in the above three areas. I suppose a good bike would have tried these things.

The motor for you bike is a Dapu MD500 actually as seen on the Pedego site relating to the bike you describe you have?

If you are confident that the motor is where the problem is and can remove it yourself I would say to ship it to a reputable repair facility. Any idea of a warranty claim on a 4yr old bike probably isn't realistic however.

Garbage is disposable from the beginning and rubber bands have a short shelf life

Repairing requires skill and experience.
You can teach a monkey to be a part changer.. especially when at the bike owners expense.
But when the load only needs to reach 15.534 mph... it should last for centuries.

They're a decent bike.. but have just as many issues as others and you pay a premium for bragging rights.
But the problem isn't the bike... it's more the typical ignorant/arrogant drawn to them who are convinced they have something special and the attitude displayed.

I got the starter bike for essentially nothing as part of a settlement where I got 7 new bikes from a closing shop that owed me. Compare the geo to the Creo. When you have power there is no need to stoop to the wind. And who wants a torture saddle anyway. It does 45 Kph on gravel.

That’s a pretty nice, unsuspended frame. I’d be a little concerned about those oddly bent over seat stay tubes, but I like everything else.

The one I just worked on had no brakes. Zero. It is call a Jetson and is a POShit, online only with no support. I feel like a dirty little whore for even touching it. At least a clown bike has a sense of humor, but it would cost more and be better made.

The motor on that green bike is a DM02. Everything about it is user programable through the display. Download this user manual and jump in at about page 12 to see what can be done.

Are Brose ebike motors really throw away motors? I sure hope not. When mine breaks I trust it will be able to be repaired because I do not like to ride e-bikes with a noisy motors. Mine is as near silent as they get and I love that feature more than I can say. Who wants to listen to a coffee grinder bicycle motor? Bicycles are silent and Electric bikes are supposed to be quiet as well.

For a Brose you need a special frame made to fit it. It cannot go on any bike. And if you have a frame for a Brose then it will only take a Brose. So I do not think you have any alternatives. The frame and installation have a large impact on sound. Some frames amplify the sound. I did a dumb thing. I had on a new black cashmere sweater when I injected Great Stuff into a noisy frame. It shot out the weep holes at the back and got on the gears and chain and rotor. Plus it ruined the new sweater. I most often install motors against a rubber bushing to cut noise transmission.
