2025 - Our Rides in Words, Photos, Maps and Videos

Went for a 17km ride this evening, but no pics as it was cold and windy. I just wanted to keep moving with the temp at 5c, feeling like 1c with the wind chill.
It's cold! Where's the Spring?

Schoolkids in Poland drown the effigy of Marzanna (a Slavic goddess) on the first day of Spring...

Us Brits have developed weapons grade cynicism, all those old traditions are viewed with disdain now, only practiced by happy clapper retired hippies.
The church is completely dead and now we're moaning that Islm is replacing them.
The culture of , 'Sorry but the rules say you cant because head office is worried' has taken over.
The last thirty years has seen a total collapse of the social cohesion and it only exists as a virtual museum display on the BBC.

According to a very old Polish proverb, the winter should end on 12th of March: "On the St. Gregory day, the winter leaves for the sea!" I know it as my second name is Grzegorz (Gregory) :) (gshzhe-gozhsh) :D

I'm picturing the Polish learning English.
Trust me, it was not that easy for me back in 1976 (the first class at a "lyceum", age 15) We were told to make cardboard labels and enter our English first names, then read the names of classmates aloud. It might be hard to believe for you but I struggled with "Betty"! (the English t doesn't sound exactly as the Polish one). The next step was learning "th" in different words...

Watch with the English subtitles! :D

I was going for a 50 mile recovery ride today but couldn't help myself, at least I didn't go overboard... 😂 A chilly 4C at the start but a nice 13C at the end, a blustery 25mph ENE wind made it feel very cold into the wind! The best part about today was this, lovely new tarmac for the full length of the back road from Shieldhill to Glenn Village!😁 40.6mph into a 25mph headwind, can't wait for a wind assisted descent!;)

The fast part!

From Glenn Village I enjoyed the descent down into Falkirk through Hallglen where I turned east through Laurieston and Polmont and on to Linlithgow! I grabbed this photo in Polmont!

From Linlithgow I decided to take on the hill at Kingscavil, I usually prefer to descend this one from the other side and have freewheeled it at over 45mph!

1743704757625.jpeg

This is part way up the climb and when I set off again my gps showed an average 35% gradient for 525ft...this was the shallow part!🤣The steep part is actually just over 20% so the gps was way off...

I then turned west for Beecraigs Country Park and had the wind at my back for the first time, 43.7mph down the descent into the valley!

I grabbed a couple photos of the valley before the descent!

Then I started up the climb to the country park, made easy today with the 25mph tailwind! More photos of the valley from near the top of the climb, the bridges over the Forth can only just be seen in the background along with the Forth estuary!

I stopped at the top for a break and a snack and had more climbing ahead, the next hill can be seen in the distance!

Lochcote Reservoir!

1743705356935.jpeg

The scenery is lovely around here!

1743705387324.jpeg

Being a glutton for punishment I decided to head east into the wind again so I backtracked to Burnhouse Road to enjoy the descent! I used the quiet back road here and I never saw a single car for miles, the scenery was still pleasant on the eye!

The road is super smooth also!

I then joined Burnhouse road and it was a little busier, I waited for a gap in the traffic for some photos!

Now the cute photos!😊

I think mom was giving me the evil eye!😂 Now it was time for the descent down into Dechmont! From there I turned west for Bathgate and used the cycle path for a few miles, now with the strong tailwind pushing me on! I left the cycle path at Whitburn and joined the main road towards Harthill before rejoining the cycle path past Polkemmet Country Park! At Harthill I thought it would be a good idea to take the back road to Shotts, it was closed for a couple of weeks recently and I thought they had been laying a new road surface! Sadly not but its not the worst road, at then end of the road I turned north to join the main road from Harthill to Salsburgh!

I had the wind at my back up the climb and then shot down the descent at over 40mph, before Salsburgh I turned south for Kirk of Shotts which was another big climb but there was method in my madness because I got to enjoy my favourite local back road to Hareshaw with a 25mph tailwind and its mostly downhll!:D It was pure cycling heaven and at Hareshaw its another big descent followed by a sharp climb and then the rollercoaster! I used the main roads home from here and arrived home very content after a cracking day on the bike!👍

So the plan was to ride the ebmx up Snowdon, which is the tallest mountain in Wales, but this morning the wind picked up and the temperature crashed, so we went to Hellvelyn in the Lakes instead.
The wind was extreme but warmer, I actually made it further up because my friends found it impossible to ride, the tiny BMX was more stable.
Absolutely, utterly knackered but feel alive factor is 10.

That's the top, we are about three miles in at this point
HLL3.jpg

The bmx is starting to struggle, the old battery is so hot I can feel the heat on my back
HLL5.jpg

The wind blew me up this bit
HLL6.jpg

That's as far as I got, the lads gave up due to the 50-60mph side gusts ,the little bmx was immune to the wind and I could ride with both feet dragging on the floor for stability

The guy in the red hat was a mountain biker himself, he was very impressed by the bmx being up there.

Brain wanted a go, he just couldn't believe I had ridden the thing up there
HLL9.jpg

I kept up with them on the descent by not having brakes
HLL11.jpg

It was pure heaven to get back on a smooth road,I lost count of the near offs as both front and rear locked up on the rocky gravel.
HLL12.jpg

They now hire out hardtail emtbs at the start of the trail, didn't see any up there, probably because there was a tornado at the top.
