2025 - Our Rides in Words, Photos, Maps and Videos

That’s a new one on me, Stefan. I’ll have to look for those.
The lower east side of Manhattan where I grew up had pickles everywhere, Stefan. There were so many delis and stores that made them fresh… Out in the street, in big barrels. I think it is/was a regional thing… Since my childhood, though, pickles aren’t nearly as popular or central to a meal.

Massive Wind Sunday

I'm currently on my standard 40 km cafe ride. The headwind is gusting as strongly as my big Vado crawled at 17 km/h at high assistance of 75/75%!

The arrow shows the wind direction. I met two road-signs like this one on the same road! (My e-bike is turned against the ride direction in the photo).

Enjoying life.

My return ride should be a way easier!

If you look for it in a Polish store, the name is "Ogórki konserwowe".

A known export brand.

Just recently, Heinz of Poland released "Pickle Flavour Tomato Ketchup". The Polish name reads "Vinegar Pickled Cucumber Flavour Tomato Ketchup" :D
Where do your fellow countrymen draw the line? Pickle-flavored ice cream? Coffee?

Wait a minute! How can you honor your recently stated pastry stop rule on a 40 km ride?

The round trip does!

More photos from my trip 😊 Thanks to the tailwind, I could cruise at 38 km/h in low assistance mode. So, I reached Błonie in no time!

Your usual McDonald's roadside franchise in Poland. Green is the McD colour scheme in Europe.

Cannot say for the whole Europe but Polish McD franchises believe the cleanliness and quality do matter!

(That's why families literally occupy the restaurants on the day like this one).

Where's the pickle?

After several days of snowy wet weather a beautiful sunrise and blue sky meant getting out on the Levo. Today's ride was 31 km around our rural home area. Miles and miles of Canadian geese flew overhead towards their northern destination. The distant snow covered Rockies are still at least 2 months from spring run-off but the potential water fall will surely fill the reservoirs. Now if we can just get the right amount of rain around seeding of crops (not sure that is ever possible listening to the old timers) hmm, I guess I have reached the old timer stage - oh well, biking keeps us young at heart . . .

Man, you're really making me miss Colorado. What part of the Rockies is that?

We would call our neck of the woods the Alberta Rockies which is along the southwestern part of the province bordering along Dave Matthew's province of British Columbia and about two hours drive to Montana. I guess our famous landmark is Banff National Park which is a little less than 2 hour drive from our place. Thinking about it and putting politics aside the Rocky Mountains literally tie Canada, U.S. and Mexico together along an amazing 3000 mile corridor. I can imagine Colorado holds much of what Alberta does in terms of plains, foothills and of course the Rockies just a bigger population of people. And my youngest grandson is a crazy Colorado Avalanche hockey fan and is trying his hardest to convert me to his way of thinking. And of course the emtn bike lets the older folks enjoy the mountain trails - enclosed is a picture of a ride I took this past summer in an area "Prairie Dog" has done some excellent reporting.

Looks like a wonderful ride. Lucky enough to have visited the Alberta Rockies 4 times and lived at the Colorado Rockies mountain front for 20 years. No words for these places. Didn’t cycle much in my Colorado days. Making up for that now.

Colorado reset a youthful stereotype I had as a Brit, slightly drummed into me by the snobby English class .
Colorado Springs in the 90s, everyone called me sir and shop keepers welcomed me at the door.
I'm sure you could be cynical at the motivation, but I arrived presuming to hear
'watcha want boy?'
Colorado was a dream to me.

Took a ride around Macclesfield Forest with the crew, I went my own way to explore a bridleway.
Everyone wanted their name on this.

Three Levo Turbos

Straight up from the rectangle next to the tree , that tiny white dot is the radio telescope Lovell at Jodrell Bank
mac3.jpg

I was going to ride to it, but much further away than I thought, built in 1957 it was the worlds largest steerable dish and it still the third largest.
It is steered by ex warship gun turret motors and was used to track sputniks launch rocket, being the only telescope capable.
It was used to receive Pioneer 5 data, being the only dish large enough to do so, Russia used it to track Luna 9 Moon lander and we put the pics in the papers
before the Russians received them, it was also in constant use tracking Russian satellites for the US.
I saw it from the road a few years back and it gave me the fright of my life as its massive dish was pointing at me above the tree line.

Just about all our mountain and hill trees have been planted by humans.

We love a good warning sign for that court case.
mac6.jpg

Lovely food and outrageously attractive barmaids
mac7.jpg

I thought this was the bridle path, pushed all the way up and rode backdown deflated.
mac8.jpg

Startled posh family, the toddlers look ready to defend.
mac9.jpg

I actually made this with very careful pedal timing

mac10.jpg

This is a non described path, so technically I can ride it, so hard and much steeper than it looks.
mac11.jpg

I bailed out back to the bridleway, it was too much for my aged body.
mac12.jpg

The fat tyres just cruised over this stuff, the path was sublime and just difficult enough to make it an accomplishment.
mac13.jpg

DesRes, just needs a roof.
mac14.jpg

Got back to the Forest centre about twenty minutes before them, two of them were taking Ibuprofen for injuries on the ride.
Seriously I had much more fun, we sat in the pub ogling the barmaids and they poured over Strava, theirs and everyone they knew.
I know its bonding an all, theyve all got smart watches for the heart monitor, so I brought up torque pedals and now thats on the list.

They probably do that just for laughs. "Did you see the look on that guy's face? Best one today! Thought he was going to fall off his bike. Oh, look, here comes another one!"

We love a good warning sign for that court case.
Please elaborate. What does the sign say? You can cycle here, but we take no responsibility?
