Friday's 16 mi coast ride started with a bit of an adventure.

First came 2-3 mi of sandy hardpack on our local rail trail. Destination: The new rail bridge being built over Batiquitos Lagoon. This shot was from an earlier ride.

The bridge was already taking construction traffic, but I'd always found it fenced off on my weekend visits. Also from an earlier ride.

Still worth riding here, though — just to commune with the lagoon and its inhabitants.

But this time we were here on a work day with everyone gone to lunch and the fence left wide open. So naturally, we rode the steel plates across the lagoon.
After all, once they put the bridge into service, we'll never be able to ride here again.

Turned around under the La Costa Avenue bridge — another place that will soon be unreachable. As we saddled up, a worker came up in a truck and asked in a friendly Texas accent,
"You fellas done?"
"Yes, just leaving."
"The exit onto La Costa is right over there."

Considering the signage at the exit, he could have been a lot less polite.

Looking back toward the bridge. Eventually they'll build a twin concrete bridge next to the one we just crossed, each with a single track. The 2nd bridge will replace the 80 year-old wood trestle currently carrying trains across the lagoon.

Then it was back up the Coast Highway to Carlsbad Village for — what else? — coffee and pastries.

You can see why the bike likes this place.
