2026 - Our Rides in Words, Photos, Maps and Videos

Łódź Heights Ride

"Next time, I'm always taking a camera with me! I didn't expect such a good weather and colours!" -- my artist friend Pawel Jonca remarked as we were climbing a steep, overgrown and stoney rural path. I admit we both could do a way better with the visuals from that trip. Turned out, the route provided to us by my friend Alfer was actually a Cross Country (XC) one, and it was hard at times! Despite me simplifying the route, we had to climb a lot in often rough terrain, so the trip (on my Vado SL) left me spent!

The public transportation is nowadays excellent in Poland. We took an ŁKA train from Warsaw West to Łódź Fabryczna for PLN 36 (US$ 9, €8.20 or £7) including bike transport -- my senior ticket was extra 35% off :) The trip took 1 h 8 min.

Łódź (literally "boat" for a city with no river, haha!) is now the fourth largest city of Poland (after Warsaw, Cracow and Wrocław). Created during the Industrial Revolution by Jewish, German and Polish entrepreneurs, was once called "the Manchester of Poland". Nowadays, it is a nice place to live with the most beautiful train station I could see in my country! It is also the home to Polish film-making.

We were mostly riding XC or gravel trails but even the asphalt roads could take us by surprise! I admit there were even some segments where I had to climb in the 3rd (or even 1st) gear and in TURBO!

The route was mostly keeping us from inhabited areas but we had to ride to Moscow anyway! :D

One of a very few photos from the actual ride.

There was a long segment of premium gravel with the descent almost all the time we loved!

Here it is!

Those many climbs and riding in rough terrain made me spent. I simplified the ride plan, and we took a long rest at the top of the climb in Kalonka.

I decided to shorten the ride but a visit in Vodka was a must! :) Here, at 13 Rye Vodka :D

Barley Vodka x Wheat Vodka :)

I made a serious navigational error on our return. We decided to ride to the train station the shortest possible way and using Pawel's Garmin. The outcome:
  • A long and erratic trip over Łódź outskirts
  • A suggestion to illegally cross the railroad main line (!!!) -- of course we didn't
  • Difficult to read the course in full sunshine.
Pawel lost his patience and swore he would buy a Wahoo ACE!

Anyway, going that way allowed us to see a gravel pit. Ah, so there's where we get gravel from! :)

We were lucky because we could immediately catch the return train!

My last 130 km was less taxing than that 60 km ride!

P.S. For @Chargeride, so he wouldn't need to guess how the name with as many as three Polish characters in 4 letters is pronounced :) Łódź is something between "oo-ts" and "oo-j" :) The easiest way to pronounce for a foreigner is "wodge".

Stefan's Special Edition
with a lot of k-word and other swearing

A reel by Pawel Jonca ❤️
-- "Kurwa, it has exceeded my capabilities!"
-- "Jesus, take care not to fall down" -- throwing the e-bike -- "o, kurwa!"
Cobblestones: "Ride, ride, ride, don't talk, just ride, kurna!" (he doesn't swear)
:D :D :D

I seem to have fallen in love with Łódź Heights. Planned a new route that should be fairly easy to ride but which would involve as many as 16 Points Of Interest, being a Metric Century with 550 m elevation gain but 640 m elevation loss and with the tailwind being dominant :)

The plan was met with interest among my riding mates. Only we are waiting for a rainless weekend!

I could not recognise Moskwa on our last trip with Pawel. Ah. The big tree behind the place name table has been gone... What a pity! (2021/2026).

Still no bike sadly and it won't be here tomorrow either, not happy after being told it would be early this week at the latest...

They have promised to send it out tomorrow on a before 12pm delivery on Thursday though and the weather is looking great, I guess my 100 mile first ride will be curtailed somewhat! Still no news about my Yamaha motor either, going on the no news is good news vibe...

These guys are insinuating that things got pretty busy at repair shops...

Very oddly, I reapeated the Conwy ride with Bri, but including the missed out bits and went to Bangor to catch the train back
BAN1.jpg

Straight from the van a beautiful long climb
BAN2.jpg

Descended to where I started last time
BAN3.jpg

The stream crossing was much deeper
BAN4.jpg

We found a bridge further up
BAN5.jpg

But it led to a large stile, no problem for two of us.
BAN6.jpg

We thought this pony was dead, but he jumped up at the last minute
BAN7.jpg

Road blocked, we ignored that obviously
BAN8.jpg

That huge climb again, I somehow managed to leave it in trail
BAN9.jpg

Took 10minutes to recover
BAN10.jpg

Climbed and climbed
BAN11.jpg

Huge fast descent towards Bangor
BAN12.jpg

Screamed down hill for 20 minutes
BAN13.jpg

Road works everywhere
BAN14.jpg

A quite boring 'beachside' ride, these are the mud flats of the Menai Straits
BAN15.jpg

No bikes on the pier
BAN16.jpg

The original Menai bridge, roadworks again
BAN17.jpg

We just turned up and got on the next train back to Conwy, six tickets 11 quid the lot
BAN18.jpg

No fancy mounting, just cram them in
BAN19.jpg

25 minutes and dropped off a 100 yards from the van...superb.

Why did you need that many?

Well, my planned Łódź Heights gravel ride is only to happen on Sat Oct 17th. This Saturday, we are gravel riding from Warsaw to Warka for apples (again!) I would not even consider it if not the fact I was invited by my friend Alfer, and he means a lot to me! Still, his plan is weird. To be able to reach the starting line in Warsaw, I will need to leave home at 6:30 am, at 8 C and in the darkness! Well, the challenge accepted :)

There is a new bike route planner by name of Veloplanner. The good thing is the website and the app are being developed by a man who cares; the use is free. The bad thing is he -- with his limited resources -- works on the content mostly for Poland.

The greatest features:
  • The full list of any Points of Interest a long distance rider might want: grocery stores, restaurants... down to railway station timetables and Booking.com accommodation!
  • Highlighting asphalt and/or gravel roads on the map
  • Temporarily hiding your route so you may focus on the map and POIs
  • Showing the location of POIs along the elevation chart
  • The possibility to work on the route plan by multiple users, online in the cloud with live comments on the changes.
The last feature is totally unique! I wish the system grows in time to include more areas.

I got fully convinced to the system when I could easily export a route to Wahoo ACE, and it also exported the full list of POIs to the "Waypoints" list on Wahoo. All other route planners had issues with that, especially Komoot.

Just a few features... The POIs are shown in blue.

I have never seen such a feature in any bike route planner!

Sounds good, but multiple users on route feels a bit social media to me
