This anecdote was in a book I'm listening to.

Apparently there was this kind of a shock jock kind of talk show host on the radio, back I don't know when. His specialty was giving his guests a hard time, right from the get go. Some say it was bitterness because he'd lost his leg in an accident or Vietnam or somewhere. Others said he was always a miserable cuss.

Anyway, one day he had Frank Zappa on the show. This was back in the early 60s when long hair on guys was rare. He says, "I see you've got long hair, so you must be a girl."

Frank Zappa says, "I see you have a wooden leg, so you must be a table. "

That's one good question, out of several that come to mind.

For what it's worth, on further reflection, I think the letter was written in the late sixties, because for some reason I remember where I living when I read it. And not that it matters but the letter was written by a woman.
