i see a few threads over the years about people getting printers. i've long been printing bicycle related bits and pieces on the various printers we've used at the office for 15 years or so now, and finally splurged on one at home. having so much fun. and then, by chance, the sp-connect mount i made for my scott's integrated cockpit broke while riding sunday! not a catastrophic failure, it cracked and was wobbly so i stopped and fully broke it and put the phone in my pocket.

so far i've made a couple cool articulated toys for the kids, brackets to hold our trash bins exactly in place inside the kitchen drawer, new end-caps for our motorized shades, the referenced replacement sp-connect mount, a few parts for the printer itself, a camera equipment mini organizer caddy, etc etc!

put it on a little ikea metal cabinet with the materials and spooler inside to keep it a little more presentable. lots to dive into this rabbit hole

they do have filaments with embedded carbon fiber that are a couple times stronger than the normal plastics, but still not real CF or anywhere near metal. i would love to see one of those real-metal 3d printers in action!

I remember buying one of the first CD burners, way back in the day, for ~$425 with two stacks of 50 blank CD's to burn.

I only burned a couple CD's to test it, and then it sat unused forever.
I ended up giving away the blank CD's

I don't remember what happened to the CD burner?
I think I gave it away before I had to pay to throw it away?

you obviously didn’t do enough listening to and sharing of music and software in the pre-internet days, i must have burned hundreds if not a thousand CDs. everything from audio mixes to photo and document backup, school assignments, data transfer, and, uh, maybe not quite legal software distribution.

the cost per MB was a tiny fraction of hard drive storage.

Yeah, I did all that stuff,..

I had to put black magic marker on this CD so that it would play,..

must have burned hundreds if not a thousand CDs.

I burned less than 100.

the cost per MB was a tiny fraction of hard drive storage.

I must have spent over $1000 on equipment and blank CD's.
I never bought or rented a DVD.

I borrowed a couple DVD's from the library a few times, but it was a PITA to go get them and gave to return them.

I watch TUBI TV now for free.
The movies are as old as FUK, but they're all new to me.

Seriously, 20-30 year old movies with Great Reviews and 100,000 foyr star ratings, and I've never heard of them?




My Fancy Ass Cassette Deck cost me $740 in 1982 CAD dollars,..

The YAMAHA Salesman at the time, said it was the next best thing to the Nakamichi Dragon,..

Yamaha didn't lie about their specs.

I have a 3 head cassette deck that will record, then listen to it's own playback so you can hear the input sound and the output sound and adjust it.

It also had Bias input control, so you could adjust the amount of Bias (high frequency magnetic radiation to "excite" the iron molecules in the magnetic tape to best replicate the input being recorded.
A flip of the switch let you hear the input to the cassette deck and the output to compare with your own ears without a Fricken robot deciding what is best.)


I hadn't played a CD in decades and decided to buy a CD player.
I couldn't find anything reasonably priced until I realized that a DVD player will play CD's.

So I bought one of those to play my CD's,..

Now I can listen to ALL my CD's and even watch DVD's too !!
But I don't.

I just don't fukin care anymore.

I was in grade 9 (1979) when my friend said that there was a new music format coming out that used laser beams to make music.

I said, "Yeah whatever dude"

I bought my first CD player in grade 11
Then bought the first portable CD player, the Sony Discman for $500 in 1982.

That Fricken Thing BLEW My mind!!?

It wasn't available in Canada so I got my dad to pick one up in the States during one of his visits.

Almost 10 years later, I had it plugged into my car stereo when I was delivered pizza.

The battery pack was as big as the CD player.
It took six C-cell batteries to run it and would kill them in less than two hours.

I built a transformer to plug it into my car, so I wouldn't have to spend $20 a day on batteries.
(The lazer and motors weren't very efficient. I bought a $20 CD player years later that ran on two double AA's but ran for days.)

This is the first CD I ever bought.
It was on of the first 100 CD's ever produced.
It was a demonstration disk to show what digital technology, and your stero could do.
It came with a warning lable that said don't turn it up too loud or you'll blow up your stereo,..

Been 3d printing for a while now. I use it for a lot of purposes, but primarily its great for shop organization and woodworking jigs. Need a weird router jig for a specific task? Super easy to knock up a model and print it. Vacuum adapter for a tool with a weird inlet size? Trivial to model and print. I needed a hinge jig to route new hinges into a framed door opening last weekend and I was able to model one that cleared the stop strip in 20 minutes and knocked it out.

My dad still has a pristine Nakamichi Dragon in his stereo setup, though I don't think hes put a cassette into it in decades. I tell him they go for a few grand on ebay (especially in excellent condition) but he hangs onto it...

So,..
If I were to buy a 3-D printer, could I make battery brackets for my e-bike??

I made brackets with polymorph plastic beads.
It worked Fricken Awesome, but kinda looks like s*it




Would it be possible to 3-D print plastic brackets for my specific ebike without needing to buy a lazer scanner to scan the curvature of my top tube?


I did spend well over $100 on Polymorph Plastic Beads to make my battery brackets.

Could your 3-D printer do the same at the same price, even if the price only included the cost of the plastic or the printer to print it with?

It's looks like something a computer might not be able to do without spending thousands of dollars to do it right??

If you tell me that he also has an Oracle Turntable, I'll drop dead right now !!

Especially If it has THE GRADO cartridge that had No Measureable Resonance

I was telling my gr. 13 math teacher about how I bought a Grado cartridge for my Pioneer turntable.

I decided to splurge and not buy the "entry level" Grado.

I spend twice as much for the next step up.

My teacher said "Ohh Too Bad !"

The entry level Grado Cartridge turned out to be a fluke.
It had no damn measureable resonance !!

The only thing better was "THE GRADO" which was the cats ass worth Hundreds of dollars.


The entry level Grado cartridge was the next best thing.
I spend more than twice as much for a cartridge with All Kinds of resonance. Lol

(I couldn't hear the difference though.
Only people with Tons of schooling and Tons of money, could afford to have Golden Ears that could tell the difference. Lol
