2026 - Our Rides in Words, Photos, Maps and Videos

A Frosty Warsaw Sunday Ride

After having slept for the entire Saturday, I decided I wouldn't let the sunny Sunday go to waste. As it was still -9 C (16 F) at 11 a.m., I put triple socks on my feet completed with my usual skiing suit.

I took the Aleje (one of the principal roads) to reach Warsaw. I got pretty tired to counter a significant headwind. Here, my usual stop at the 12th kilometre, where I always sing the song called "Hair". Like, "There goes a soldier with long hair, military police running after him in the Aleje, and you wear, wear, wear long hair as we do! There's a hippie with long hair, he turned from Krucza and walks in the Aleje..." :)

As I reached Warsaw, it turned out the bike (and pedestrian) infrastructure was unrideable. So I found a way to continue by streets with (really sparse) traffic. As I was approaching the City, the chain of my Vado dropped. Why? I replaced it, and instantly the chain snapped on the ride attempt as I was by Sobieski Hotel in Zawisza Square. Uh-oh. I knew I would fix the chain but not in this frost! Walked the e-bike to Warszawa-Ochota, which is probably the smallest train station of Warsaw.

A warm season photo. The ticket hall inside is tiny!

I had to negotiate the repair with a female guard inside. She was a lovely person! Showed me the place to safely work on the bike, and later let me in the (otherwise paid) toilet so I could wash my greasy hands! As I was done with removing the broken chain link, my chain tool snapped itself... :) Moreover, I didn't take the quick-link pliers with me! There is a technique that could be used instead. With the bike in its normal orientation, you join the two loose ends of the chain with a Quick-Link at the chain top. Now, you need a force to make the link snap into the position. You just need to kick the right pedal strongly from the top, and that's it :) Of course, I had many spare master links with me. (I will never ever leave the quick-link pliers at home anymore!) After the repair (and thanking the lady!), I had no slightest issues with my Vado, and I could warm up inside the station building as a bonus!

"Fregata", a historical restaurant bar in Saska Kępa was full with families arriving there for lunch. I was early enough to secure a small table for myself! Polish (or, Clear) Borscht was an excellent warmer, and Pierogi Ruskie is my favourite meal :)

Me doing a "live" by Fregata. The high temperature was -4 C (25 F).

As I found myself on the left bank of the Vistula and stopped by Legia Stadium, I felt I lost the motivation (so I considered returning by train). Then I decided I didn't want to be a "French puppy" and visualised the return by city streets and main roads. Again, the drivers must have completely understood a cyclist riding a road at frost was a necessity not a malicious act. No one honked on me or otherwise expressed their dissatisfaction! As I was moving with the tailwind, pedalling was surprisingly easy now!

Until I stopped at one of my favourite BP service stations for coffee. I realized it was freaking cold again! So... I produced a spare cardigan from my backpack :) The last 12 km at -9 C were easy!

In the city.

A note on the battery use
The frost is significantly reducing the effective e-bike battery charge. With my new battery, I returned with just 13% of the battery left only after a 60 km ride, and I was not using any excessive assistance!

You rock Stephen! Keep on keep'n on!
and DAMN that is chilly!
Thank you, Ed! I was greatly motivated by a friend who walked for 9.5 km, and her male friend who ran for 30 km on the frosty Saturday :)
Once one of the Minnesotan EBR members declared an e-bike should not be ridden below 20 F. How wrong he was :) A good clothing makes miracles...

(Another "live" of last Sunday, just after the chain snapped).

It was already several years ago. I was doing shopping at a supermarket. A boy stared at me and said something to his mother. She sternly informed the son: "This mister wears skiing clothes. I cannot see anything wrong about it!" ;) Another winter, a man spotted me in the same clothes, same supermarket. He friendly addressed me: "Have you done skiing recently? Returning from the mountains?" :D

Yes my 30m ride with barely any climbs or speed, in trail the whole way, I had only 2 bar left.
That was only 3C, you would probably do better by having a hard work ride as the battery would heat itself up.

I might probably ruin your day Charge but there are as many as 16 known MTB trails starting in the radius of 3 miles from Neston :)

Komoot.

Besides, thank you for your latest video!

Stefan, thanks for reminding me why I have a car and a pickup. Nice job fixing the chain! +4f here this morning, windchill -15f. No riding for me no matter how warm I could dress. I’ve worked outside in this weather and every so often we’d have to get in the truck to warm our hands.

It's really cold!

I admit Poland's climate can be still described as "moderate", especially if we compare it to the northern U.S. or Canada. During my lifetime, the most extreme winter was the one of 1978/79, and the longest one I can remember was the 2012/2013 (six months).

Well, I admit a proper car could be advantageous during the winter but it wouldn't give my poor body the workout it needs! If the winter gets any harsher here, I'd try to push the limits a little :)

Short 11 mile wander this afternoon. Sun peeked out and it didn't feel too cold, was beautiful, mist in the valleys. Battery use seemed a bit heavy, down from 91% to 41% left in tank when I got home but with 1500ft steep climbing in that 11 miles and I'm out of shape (winter padding) so using more power on the hills at present. Just glad to be out on bike.

I'd downloaded Blevo and my battery health is pretty good at 93% after 5 years. But if I do 25 miles with hills or go further I'll be taking the range extender with me for peace of mind.

Here's pics of one of my fist rides just after I bought the Vado SL, middle of the UK second Covid Lockdown on 14th Oct 2020 and the same place again this afternoon. Bike still going strong 5 years and 3 months later.

Beautiful spot! Nice of the Druids to leave you something to lean your bike on at the top.

Steep is right — 136 ft/mi is some pretty intense climbing!

A chilly day with frost lingering well into the afternoon so I decided to stick to the main roads as much as possible, we had a chilly SE wind but at least it was only around 10mph! After some climbs I had this awesome descent down into Harthill, I usually hit over 40mph down it when we have a westerly wind but had to settle for 30mph today!

1768848970575.jpeg

From Harthill I headed up the climb into Longridge before enjoying the descent down into the valley where I turned east towards Stoneyburn and Addiewell and up the climb at West Calder! Then it was NE through Polbeth and Livingston on the busy A71, eventually leaving the A71 at Kirknewton which was my turning point! I was very glad to get off that main road and join the A70 which I would remain on all the way to Carnwath! 15 miles of awesomeness, a much quieter and fun road to ride!

I stopped at Kirknewton for this photo looking north with the village of East Calder in the foreground and the Ochil Hills in the background!

1768849398423.jpeg

The A70 runs alongside the Pentland Hills for many miles and I just had to keep stopping for photos...

1768849467107.jpeg

1768849561472.jpeg

The first proper climb on the A70 up to Harperrig Reservoir!

1768849618762.jpeg

More cracking views of the Pentlands part way up the climb!

Looking back towards Kirknewton!

1768849740342.jpeg

Some photos of Hareperrig Reservoir!

1768849798800.jpeg

The next big climb on the A70, this was from the top looking back down!

1768849850580.jpeg

Cobbinshaw Reservoir to the north!

1768849912666.jpeg

Now at 1100ft which is near the top of the climb, what a road!

1768849991791.jpeg

A distant view of the Ochils to the north!

1768850018165.jpeg

Finally a descent!

1768850038675.jpeg

It flattens out here before another fast descent!

1768850085198.jpeg

1768850097369.jpeg

The end of the Pentlands now nearing Carnwath!

1768850139523.jpeg

Love this part of the A70!

1768850167129.jpeg

At Carnwath I turned west towards Carluke, lots of climbing ahead but its worth it for these views!

1768850256840.jpeg

1768850268646.jpeg

1768850281109.jpeg

1768850291793.jpeg

Almost at the top of the climb looking east!

1768850318707.jpeg

I then arrived in the village of Kilncadzow and stopped for my final snack and a short break!

1768850378005.jpeg

Then it was an awesome descent down into Carluke, hitting over 40mph! From there I joined the main A73 from Carluke to Newmains, thankfully it wasn't too busy! At Newmains I decided to get off the main road and use the back roads to avoid the fast dual carriageway up to Newhouse! I headed NE into Bonkle then up the big climb to Hareshaw, this road is south facing so the sun had melted all the ice! My gps reached 60 miles as I passed through Hareshaw with 5 miles to go, I rejoined the main A73 here and arrived home a short time later! What a brilliant ride that was, perfect conditions for cycling and it was such a bonus having light winds for a change!

Tomorrow is looking nice also although the wind will pick up in the afternoon, around 25mph at worst from the east so I will be out again before the rain comes on Wednesday!

What app is that? Looks kinda like my Specialized app (latest black icon version), but my app doesn't show time spent in rider power zones. (I have a Vado SL 1 5.0 with Mastermind.)

The Specialized "Ride" app. It's for all bikes not just e-bikes. But what's fun is it automatically stores all your rides when you use Mission Control or whatever it's called now, the black one. Anyway once you hit finish on the black app after a cycle, the Ride app automatically also records all the data.

Cool! I'll look into it. The default zone boundaries probably don't reflect my own metabolism, but I see you can edit them.

Off to Pendle Hill again, looks windy, cold and muddy, van might not make it there.
Should be a great day
Good luck! I wonder if I can find some time to go to Warsaw on Tuesday (e-bike and train) to get to the last store in Warsaw that might have the "Too Young To Be Herod" Christmas Stout :) (The name is taken from a comedy movie. A group of youth prepares for a nativity play, and a young boy says: "I wanna be Herod!" -- "No, you are too young to be Herod" :D)

1768869276441.png

Artezan Brewery (just 10 km from my place) sold it out!
