Magic (not real magic) chain lube for outstanding lasting performance and virtually no wear

I'm not starting with a perfectly clean chain every time I lube. If I did, I'd probably only use wax.

Not before every lube... Just a new chain to remove the factory coating.
By not doing so I found the chain stayed messy until it was eventually eliminated by routine chain maintenance.

You know if you two get a room.. you could try out all the different lubes and decisively figure out which one penetrates deepest and reduces friction on your chain.

Lol, I think I will pass on that one. I would like to find one decent but not too expensive product that will help maintain my chain.

Most any work just fine and the difference between the popular brands is negligible. Some last a little longer between intervals than others but conditions play a bigger role in my opinion.

If it were me now, I'd skip the whole hot wax business and just clean my chain really good and use the T-9 that you're using.

The ZeroFrictionCycling testing guy says otherwise - that the worst brands, even popular ones, only last 1/10 the distance of the best chain lubes.

I might just do it as a winter project. But yeah, I see no reason to not keep using the T9

Actually KMC already painted the chain,..

I think it's just a stupid gimmick.
It was "coated" with something fancy for no good reason other than a cosmetic one.

Fricken stupid.
It just wears off and serves no purpose.

As for me waxing my chain, you're right, I never pedal, but I've had my wheels and chains off my e-bikes more than a dozen times, and having a crud free chain just makes sense to me.

I ride on dusty gravel roads, and if I used an oil based chain lube, my entire chain drive would be a mess, with gritty dust sticking to the oil and grinding into the chain.


My 7th gear is caked in dust in this picture, but if I just put it in 7th gear and spin the chain, the dust just falls off.

Most lube seems to give me the same amount of miles, and when you put 200 miles a week on my bikes, you get a lot of time to observe. and after over 40k on e-bikes and a lot of chains so I go for ease of use less mess and how long it lasts in the rain. rock and roll blue is great when you dont have a lot of rain. its fast to apply easy to wipe off does not make a big mess. I get maybe 40 miles when I ride in the rain.

SilcaSynerg-E E-Bike Lube lasts a really long time, over a month with rain rides, so maybe 500 miles, and without rain for a few months. It does not make a huge mess either. But it's a hassle to apply as it's so thick.​

In the ZFC tests, which being real data isn't something you're probably interested in reading, T-9 came in 33rd at the end of the 1,000 km dry/clean run, 38th after the dry/dusty run, 36th after the 3rd clean run, etc. Pretty middle of the road. There are worse, sure, but there are also better.

In general, the immersive wax and then drip wax lubes fare the best, even in on-road dry and clean environments. Kind of an eye-opener to me.

FWIW, that does well in the ZFC tests. Tops during the clean/dry run, 20th after dusty, then not so great after another clean run, but then shines after the wet exposure.

That's what I'm going to do.
I've already done the immersive wax, but I'm going to wait till I've got about 20 miles on the chain before I use the drip wax.

I should be ready for the drip wax by the end of next year.

I thought about wax, but the hassle of taking the chain off and off again, and all the rain and cold, I think it would turn into a hassle. Roadies don't ride in the winter rain.

I just give my chain an annual cleaning and hot wax treatment.

I'm sure that would work (for someone that actually pedals) along with some sort of liquid wax lube applied the same way as an oil based lube and applied regularly.

If only waxes are used, you shouldn't get a messy chain.

If a waxed chain lasts as long (or almost as long) as an oiled chain then I think having a clean chain is worth it.

What about an annual immersive wax treatment that gets maintained with a drip wax throughout the year?

I just cleaned and treated my chain in hot parrafin wax with added Teflon powder.
Would my choice of drip wax be affected by that?
