Yamaha CrossCore RC Modifications so that I can ride again

I haven’t been able to ride for the past year due to complications from a cervical laminectomy, (three levels), but I wanted to try, so I bought a nearly new Yamaha CrossCore RC. The RC has a greater stack height and shorter reach, so I figured that if I was to ride again, this would be a good place to start.

The first change was a Hunter Smooth Move bar with 50mm of rise and 16 degrees of sweep. That was enough to make it possible for me to ride without spasms in my neck and upper back.

Since it had proved itself rideable I moved my grips, inner bar ends, saddle and Rock Shox seatpost over.

The stock tires were heavy and made for a rough ride, so I switched to 47mm Maxxis Receptor gravel tires, (saved 3.2 pounds and improved the ride).

The stock fork was also heavy and not great, (not terrible either), so I replaced it with a Suntour MobiE25, saving another two pounds and improving the ride, (I ride a lot of dirt roads and cow paths).

The stock brakes were fine, but I switched them out for a set of Shimano XT calipers and levers because I liked the XT brakes on my old CrossCore and I knew that I would want them eventually.

The last change was a Shimano XT 11 speed shifter with an SLX derailleur and cassette, 44t chain ring with an 11-40 cassette, (I needed a derailleur with a clutch for the rough roads).

That’s it for now, but I will probably swap the wheels out for some DT Swiss 1600s in the future.

I am happy with the results and the removed parts will go to a local charity that puts bikes together for people that can’t afford one.

It’s nice to be back in the saddle again. I didn’t think that it would happen.

Awesome!
Glad to see you back in the saddle. Nicely done with the upgrades and mods.
Thanks Dave. I was looking at some pictures from a few years ago and decided that I had to see if I could make something work.

I have it down to 47 pounds. It’s still heavy for a bike, but it handles as if it were much lighter and the ride is very nice.

Yeah, I bet you're 5lbs at least lighter than mine for sure! Once I'm wheelin' I don't even feel it.
Good work mate! :)

Ouch, sorry you've had such a long layoff. Hope the new ride is working out.

I came real close to getting a Wabash RT last fall on closeout. It was cheap enough to be OK considering wholesale equipment changes like you did but it was still about 5 pounds too close to my heavier bike for me to be comfortable with. (My personal line in the sand was the bike had to be at least 15 lbs lighter than my 57+lb Haibike).
