A few scenes from last week's coast ride south to the 2 Swami's Beach overlooks in south Encinitas...

Looking south to the La Jolla Peninsula from the south overlook, a city park. Never tire of this view.

Palm trees aren't native to SoCal. They were first brought in by wealthy estate owners in the 1930s. Now they're beloved regional icons.

A lizard was staring up at this dire warning when we first pulled up at the north overlook but scurried down the face of the cliff just as I got my phone off the handlebars. As if lizards can't read.

Encinitas has at least 8 public beach overlooks, all nicely landscaped, most with benches, and some with picnic tables. This part of town is always crawling with surfers drawn to the famous Swami's reef break below the 2 outlooks featured here. Why the surfers need saving is unclear.

Keeping the big flower farm 2 miles north of our house under close ebike surveillance in recent days as the fields come into bloom from north to south.

Really hate having to endure this ocean view from Armada Drive in the process, but somebody's gotta do it.

The farm makes a strong brown diagonal in this Google Earth satellite view taken when the fields were bare. "The Flower Fields" is its commercial name.

Prior to the mid-1980s, Carlsbad was primarily agricultural, with flowers and berries the main crops. This last of the big flower farms is still going strong.

Fields at the north end are already coming in nicely, and the farm tours have already begun.

The whole farm looked like this when we did the tour back on April 4, 2023. The owner's expecting an even better crop this year — and not in spite of but because of our record late start to the wet season. Apparently, the germination yield's a lot higher when tender seedlings aren't getting pelted by raindrops.

All of the flowers above are ranunculas.

The 0.9-mile loop marked on today's ride map above runs right along the flower fields. Great place to rack up flat, low-traffic road laps with some nice scenery to keep it interesting.

The march of the ranunculas
Continued ebike surveillance of our local flower farm...

At the time of my last report several days ago, only the northernmost fields were coming into bloom.

North end in full bloom now.

The next few fields south are in various stages of partial bloom, with the yellow and white flowers always the most advanced, and the reds the least. Hard to tell the tour-takers from the workers at times.

The white and yellow ranunculas are spearheading the last field to show any flowers.

And still no flowers at the south end of the farm.

What a joy to have these huge carpets of color just 2 miles from home! Didn't notice the southbound bloom front in previous years. Will be interesting to see if the pattern holds up next spring.

We often ebike the 10 mi from south Carlsbad to Oceanside harbor or pier. The best route through south Oceanside uses this rail crossing, which 3 weeks ago sprouted a new painted rock garden.

Its creator, a friendly 60-something woman with a Texas accent who lives nearby, happened to be working on it when we crossed. She'd done most of the work — with city permission — but her neighbors painted some of the rocks.

I've noticed that folks who live in O'side (Oceanside) tend to be quite fond of it, and she's no exception.

Lots of cute little touches with more to come per the gardener-in-chief.

Finally back on the road again.
Great day, reasonably warm at 14C. Back on the regular full finger gloves, 2 layers of long sleeve and the vest but didn't need the heat.

Nice to be back on the SL after a week away — this time for a 20-mile coast ride south on a beautiful 58°F day.

No hurry. Beach/bluff stops for wave-watching at South Carlsbad, South Ponto, Moonlight, Cardiff (the turnaround), and Beacon's. And between stops, an alternately brisk and leisurely pace in mostly ECO and OFF. Snaps from 2 stops below.

South Carlsbad

Wasn't expecting dinosaurs at the popular campground store on the bluff above South Carlsbad State Beach. These lifelike models were being prepped for an upcoming 3-week animatronic display.

None were moving at the time, but they still reinforced Jurassic Park's central lesson: We were lucky to show up after the dinosaurs were long gone.

The girl behind the store counter swore with a wink that the alien scientists showed up after the display had been installed.

I imagined the 2 standing back shouting, "Pull his tail, dude! Go on, pull his tail!" Tourists!

Moonlight
Yeah, I post a lot of Moonlight Beach pix. This time, the lifeguard headquarters area caught my eye.

The HQ building on a drearier day. Way more impressive than any lifeguard office on Baywatch, and there are at least 4 more lifeguard HQs with similar architecture between La Jolla Shores and Carlsbad.

Beach views from the HQ, south toward Solana Beach and north toward Leucadia.

The HQ building is a busy place. A big lookout room stands above the first-aid station. Lifeguards here train in all kinds of rescues and some law enforcement as well. Teaming up with other first-responders is part of the job.

Never noticed this beautiful free-standing tiling leaned against the building before. The piece evokes a stained-glass feel, but the opaque tiles look ceramic.

Every lifeguard HQ has an ocean conditions board updated daily by hand. This day's strong chaotic post-storm surf earned a "poor" rating on the board and a blunt "not a surfing day" on the radio surf report. The die-hards usually come out anyway, but no surfers in sight this time.

Signature red swimming floats straight out of Baywatch. But make no mistake: Lifeguards are highly respected around here. All the ones I've talked to take the work very seriously.

No shortage of equipment. Moonlight's a gateway to miles of popular beaches and surf breaks below dangerous cliffs. Imagine all the trouble folks can get into around here. And all the trouble they can cause.

That's exactly how I picture California away from the Baywatch fantasy of rollerblading and muscle beaches.
