Yamaha Wabash RT Rack and Controller

I’m a new Wabash RT owner. I bicycle vacation tour and have spent quite a bit of time this month adding Planet Bike Cascadia ALX fenders and an Axiom Journey rack for panniers. If you plan to add a rack, I do not recommend using the small black triangular receiving mounts built into the Wabash frame. I had a bad experience using them with my prior Yamaha Civante. The bolts that the Wabash black triangular rack mounts receive are too small to handle the weight of loaded panniers. When I tried using the small black rack mounts on my Civante, the bolts into the black triangular mounts broke (sheered) off.

I would love to hear work around ideas from Wabash users who need a way to charge their phones from the Wabash battery. The lack of a charging port on the Wabash controller is very disappointing.

I also own a Giant bike that has a Yamaha motor and a very nice, full featured controller. Does anyone have experience putting a Giant controller on a Yamaha bike??

I am also a new Wabash RT owner. I have swapped out to the Display C, which has a USB port along with Bluetooth that Display A doesn't. It was an easy plug and play swap.

Wow that sounds great. Are you in the US? Where did you buy a display C?

Yes, In the US, but bought from an Italian firm off of eBay. They offered it with the brackets as well. It took about 3 weeks, but worth it. I'm new here, so not sure if I can post the link to the item on eBay. He seems to have 2 left.

It took me about half an hour to swap out. I removed the battery, then the hex bolt that covers the cable that goes into the downtube, just unplug the old one, and plug in the new one. I also assembled most of the mounting pieces before making the swap, and just needed to attach to the handlebar the display and the buttons.

Thanks so much for details. I was concerned that European parts might have a lower speed limit for pedal assistance. Are you still experiencing pedal assistance to 28 mph?

I have to work hard to get there, but I haven't been able to go beyond 28mph. I thought the limiter in in the electronics next to the motor.

I understood the speed at which European e-bikes stop offering assistance is 15 mph. Is your motor still offering assistance when you pedal above 15 mph?

Definitely provides assist beyond 15 mph, but I rarely go much beyond 20 on my rides. I will get out this weekend and try and push the limits. Sorry for misunderstanding your original question.

I finally got to get out for a bit today. I had one nice stretch of road where I put the hammer down, so to speak. Max power and pedal like hell. Got to 44kph, which converts to 27.3 mph, and the motor was still assisting, so I guess the 28mph is achievable. Regarding charging my phone, I didn't try that. I don't have the right cable to actually use it as a charging port. It's a micro-USB port, so I'd need a male micro-USB to male USB-C cable.

Display C is just that, a display. With the correct USB cable it defiantly should charge your phone.

Wallabe14, Do your have a display C on a Wabash RT charging a phone? The display that comes with the Wabash RT has a micro jack that gives data to a bike computer, but it does not offer power to charge a phone. Do you “definitely” know the display C would be any different?

Has anybody been successful getting power out of the Display C USB micro port? While I had no problem disconnecting the original Display A from my Wabash RT, and connecting the Display C in its place, I have had no success so far powering my phone via a micro USB to USB C adapter cable. The manual linked above says to use an OTG USB 2.0 cable. The cable I tried was bought specifically as an OTG ('on the go') cable, and does not work: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CMLS2MB1 . Maybe the host and device ('target') side need to be reversed, i.e. the cable needs to be configured for the micro USB B side to be the host side?

From a different (USB C to USB C) cable description:

I had success getting the pedal power displayed and recorded in the Jepster app on my phone, after selecting the CPP Bluetooth profile on the Display C.
I can also confirm that there has been no change in the maximum speed for motor assist: it's still 28 mph (and you can still try to pedal faster....).


Update: I now also tried the (flat, very short) cable shown in the picture above, oriented in both directions (phone = host and phone = target device, with a USB C to USB micro adapter at the Yamaha Display C end), and charging works for neither of the two cable orientations. (I was hoping that the Yamaha display at the host end would work, since that is the opposite of what the usual orientation of USB C to micro cables seems to be, where it seems to be assumed that the USB C end is at the power supply end. Naively I would also have assumed that 'host' and 'target' only influence data flow, but maybe only the host can supply power to the target. Google AI thinks that data control and power flow are indeed independent, and a device could supply power to the host. Since the outcome is negative, I still don't know whether the host vs target business is of any importance. This article https://lavalink.com/lavablog/articles/otg-vs-simulcharge/ seems to indicate that USB OTG dictates that only the host can supply power. ) Now, this might be a problem with my phone.

Does anybody know whether maybe there is a fuse inside the Display C for the micro USB port? I tried all combinations of cables and adapters, and as far as I can tell my phone charges just fine with all of them, except when connected to the Yamaha Display C.
