In North America the only area I know of where this is typical is Quebec Province in Canada. But there are many cultures/countries where the currency symbol comes after the number so it's not uncommon to see that usage especially on the internet.

It is foreign competition driving oil prices down. The US being oil independent is due to shale oil. Shale oil is more expensive to refine. Shale oil is is produced and refined when oil prices are over 50 or 60 dollars per barrel. OPEC and others are trying to keep prices low because selling a barrel of oil for $45 a barrel is better then not selling any at all. We buy oil when prices are low, we produce oil when prices are higher. OPEC has every incentive to keep prices low.

I was raised in Europe, and my 3rd language (english) was thought with a very strong Uk influence. But i hardly remember if the $ sign after the number was part of the learning class.
It's just logical imo to put it at the end b/c in a conversation we say :
Ex:
- The Creo costs 8.000 dollars;
Not :
- the Creo cost dollars 8.000

I doubt low oil prices will put off those wanting to use their commute as an opportunity to fit in exercise, and combined with the current international travel restrictions will encourage folks to take driving and/or outdoor vacations

I didn't purchase my ebike for gasoline savings, 2 years ago... (Though I hoped when I bought it, I would end up commuting to work on it eventually -- which I have, 222 times since then -- but that wasn't one of the top "purchase reasons" for me.) I've been driving a hybrid car for 10 years though, so my gasoline costs have been low, relative to my prior cars, for a long time.
I know some folks buy an ebike to move to a car-free/gas-free diet, but plenty more (like me) aren't basing the purchase on that factor. My principal motivator in the purchase was to regain regular exercise.

I get all that, and I understand the internationality of this forum but when you're talking about USD the dollar sign goes in front. As for a UK influence, where does the £ go for GBP? Or the € for EUR (in the UK), for that matter?

That is the result of both Saudi Arabia and Russia pushing prices lower. One reason for them to push prices lower is to drive our shale oil producers out of business. Creditors over the past 3 days are starting to panic some of these producers may file for bankruptcy protection. Our government is now supposed to be working on it. Who knows. This is a big deal, it could easily cause a recession when combined with the virus issues. It's a case of who can lose money the longest wins. Wins the short game at least.

Mostly accurate is your statement.
Only after 1680 it was agreed to have the sign before for US. Before it was always after.
It has a nice history the dollar symbol with the pillar sign and the crosses.
Depends also on the language/country , that is how i got to use it the way i did in an american forum. If we talk about USD from a Canadian or European perspective it goes after.
But if the servers and site owners are overseas , then it is not clear what are the rules , i see it as an international forum.
btw- cents do go after. Isn't that absurd ?
0.¢2 , $0. ¢2 ?? or 0.2¢ as commonly agreed.
And another one - we can't write $9.99¢ ? That looks more professional .
ex: $15.25¢, $1.99¢ . $0.99¢.

JR is well informed. Except for cheap gas if the price wars go on it will hurt the economy overall. Layoffs will have a ripple effect. Oil more than the virus is what is cause the current drama in stocks, bonds, precious metals. As far as eBikes vs cars for transportation, I doubt if eBike commuters are going to purchase used Hummers and ditch their eCommuter bikes lol
