Upgrading to a BBSHD on a BBS02 based e bike

Seconds ago I was watching crows divebomb a red tail hawk that was hunting for gophers from the top of a redwood. When they do this the crows almost bark the word Hawk, Hawk. Only 20% of squirrels make it one year. We don't think of them this way but they are killers with razor sharp claws. They eat baby birds.
I make a very tasty version of squirrel that is best described as "pulled squirrel." I cook it whole in a pressure cooker for an hour, clean all the meat off the bones, liberally add Sweet Baby Rays BBQ sauce, put it in the oven at 350 for a half hour, and serve it like pulled pork. Its quite good IMHO.

This article claims the three speed SA IGH, specifically the second gear of the SA 3sp, is stronger than any of the other common and affordable multi speed IGHs, due to the construction :

Good article. Thank you. I just saw a Nuvinci N380 kit for $199. That sounds like a bargain. You still need to lace it. Or a bike shop will cut the spokes and lace it into the old rim.
Avitar explained 😂😂😂

NOW we know why their first year mortality is so high.

That article makes a ton of sense. It’s got me considering a Nuvinci too.
I once made the worlds best pup fetch toy. After a suicidal squirrel dove under my tire at 5Mph I cut off its tail and tied that to an oak stick with a leather bootlace. The dog loved it. This is not directly on topic. I made a bike deal today. For one year I get to eat top-notch French food three meals per week, provided that I convert the chef's bike. But it has an American bottom bracket. Darn. That is a no go. But I found a converter kit on Luna for $22. I bought two.

I found a Nuvinci N380 kit for $109. 135 OLD, Disc. Someone screwed up on their pricing. It is on Amazon right now. I just don't have a bike to put it on this week.

I saw more failed SA then Nuvinci. Anecdotal but enough for me to sell my new SA build unused. Call me an old opinionated curmudgeon, but I prefer my 7 speed derailleurs. Just a prejudice… My opinion is like butts, everyone has one.

I think the easiest solution might be to limit the BBSHD to 750w with the programming cable?

I’m not looking for high speed or blinding acceleration. With my disability, I need total reliability. That’s why I’m replacing the BBS02.

Of course I realize now that it would have been easier and far cheaper to just keep the BBS02 and get a smaller rear cog for the SA IGH, but Rambo, the hunting e bike company, recommended a larger front sprocket instead if I wanted higher speeds for road use, and said changing out the rear sprocket was more complicated. They didn’t warn me about overheating the BBS02.

After a lot of research I realize that was hogwash - they sold larger front sprockets (more expensive) but not rear cogs (which are cheap), so they recommended the former, not the latter.
Limit the amps.

The article I linked praised the Nuvinci above the SA 3sp, but said for the price the SA 3sp was a good stout reliable IGH for a mid motor application. Apparently the SA 3sp middle gear is machined into the central axle itself and if I understand this correctly, is not engaged by powls or dogs like in 5 or higher speed IGHs, and the powls are beefier than the other affordable IGHs. However he does praise the strength and the higher gearing spread of the Nuvincis.

I wonder if a Nuvinci is available to fit a 170mm fat e bike frame?

They only go to 148mm. You would need to take it in by 11mm on each side, 7% each, .43 of an inch. You also would need a press. I have one and mostly use it for expansions of about 5mm. Al alloy is not good to bend around much.

I really don't know and I'm pretty cynical about many reviews. Most here seem to think their choice is the best choice. Opinions get clouded by ego.

As I wrote, I'm just forming an opinion based on support calls. Certainly not a scientific or necessarily an accurate view. I did have an SA with drum brake built but sold it unused by me to a great Texas builder Rix Ryds. I think our EBR Anne worked with him.

I've only ridden Shimano Nexus drives in the last decade. I'd run an IGH with a BBS01B. The BBSHD is massive overkill for me. But hey! Have fun. I sure can't fault any builder for following the dream!

For me, the best thing about leaving the old Polish immigrant neighborhood was never having to see squirrel or raccoon on the dinner table again.

But I refuse to give up pierogis, kielbasa, haluski and halupki. Even if I am a Kraut, not a Pole.
