Did you put O-ring lube between the two halves? That will keep out the water. I over use it inside then wipe off the extra on the outside. We will be having El Nino rains in California this winter. Pictured is the first bike I killed with water incursion before I knew how to prep motors. Those are 5 inch tires. The motor on the far left is a fat Bafang.

I didn't use any special lubricant - that sort of thing is rather hard to find round here. I think my best bet is to do regular inspections and maintenance, say every 500km or 1000km, especially if I have been riding through rain (and the rain here can be of the tropical monsoon variety).
