It's always a fun read when Tesla publishes stuff like this, or enables their fanboy favorite pubs like Electrek to throw out some eye candy for their rabid fan base.
I like it primarily because it gives hope to multiple industry's using battery technology, including yur fav that many of you come here to read more about nearly every day.
This does give more plausibility to China's own battery manufacturers, one of which is mass producing their own million mile battery for EV's,going commercial with it in 2021. China is in a pretty sweet position having not only the massive manufacturing base already for batteries, but their own raw resources for all the materials being used now, as well as a near 'lock' on many possible future materials, where they have negotiated exclusionary long term raw resource agreements with the best places on earth where these materials can be found in plenty. Their multitude of universities have produced thousands of scientists who have been working on nothing but batteries for years. They may not have the press that we do, where experts become well known like Dahn has here with his Tesla connection.
Their culture isn't about developing 'rockstars' that tend to suck the air completely out of every room they walk into. So I would not underestimate in any way, shape, or form what China is already likely accomplishing with respect to battery longevity. They are very happy to fly under the radar for as long as possible, until BAM, the EV industry here wakes up some day to see China has leapfrogged them entirely.
