Specialized Turbo Vado SL: An Incredible E-Bike (User Club)

The n+1 rule
E-bikes didn't exist for 100 years, and Velominati rules do not apply to e-bikers :) However, owning two e-bikes is very practical for me in the situation i have got rid of my car. There was a time when my big Vado was under total overhaul for 3 months but I could rode my Vado SL during that time.

I think there's a corollary: Maybe you can't afford another bike right now, but you should at least have one more than you can store.
I would say the optimum is two very different e-bikes. Both ridden (alternately), both maintained.
Now: I've just watched a GCN programme where the guys rode vintage "mountain bikes" in the British winter gravel bike role. What they said was a modern MTB could not ride that fast as they were! Which reminds me formerly mine Giant Trance E+, a Trail e-MTB. I have never liked its performance outside off-road. I even decided I would not take it for a e-gravel race: too slow! Pity I didn't know that just 5 years ago.. A failed and expensive experiment.

if storage and free time and health were unlimited, i'd probably have ...

a super light high end road bike [check]

a super light high end electric road bike [check]

a gravel bike of some type [don't have one, used to have two wheelsets for my creo but frankly hated it on pavement]

a full suspension or maybe hardtail e-mtb : i likely wouldn't ever use this but would like to explore

a powerful electric commuter, belt drive, internal gearing, hub drive, 500-750w, 50-100nm, rack [not exactly, this needs an upgrade but the current one is still serving me well]

if i could add just one... that would be a tough call! adding two would be easy :D

Every time I fantasize about adding a bike to the stable, I come to the same conclusion: No room for another bike. But even if there were, the 2 bikes I already have pretty much cover the riding I realistically want to do.

The old torque-sensing hub-drive commuter, my 1st ebike, is still good enough for my infrequent utility and beach rides. And given my hilly local terrain and so-so fitness, it's hard to imagine a bike better suited to everything else than my Vado SL 1 5.0 EQ.

Part of it's my age, hilly local terrain, and strong preference for riding from home. I'm frankly too old and brittle for technical MTB, and the SL (set up for gravel) handles all the other offroad opportunities available from home.

Nonetheless, I salivated over this unmotorized 8.1 kg custom flat-bar Orbea Orca for days:

But it would be a stupid purchase in my case.

I often ride the SL in OFF by choice, including on hills. But plenty of local hills that I just can't or won't climb without help, and the weight difference wouldn't change that much. These hills are tolerable on the SL but would become significant barriers to riding from home on the Orbea.

Still, we have lots of excellent road riding with good to great bike infrastructure here, and I think that Orbea would be a doable blast on roads with gradients generally under 5-6%.

With proper gearing, our rolling coast rides wouldn't be a problem on the Orbea, but many inland hill rides sure would be. And as gorgeous as the coast is, I still need some variety.

Often, especially when I'm after a drink or two :) I fantasize I would buy yet another e-bike. Recently, I had at least one too many and I shared the thought with my closest friends on Facebook, also explaining them I was not sober :) The two best comments were:
  • "You have no storage space, and your two e-bikes are exactly what you need to make any of your cycling dreams come true!" (Tommy)
  • "You won't buy a next e-bike because you could not ride it under the influence, and you won't buy the new e-bike when you sober up :D" (Watman)
That's what good friends are for! :)

I took out my Pentax K-1 DSLR from some deep place in my room. Cleaned it, charged the battery (not used for 4 years, it could charge!) then I realized there was no SDXC card in the camera :) Of course, ordered the memory cards and the interface to download the photo files onto the PC. Then I had a drink or two. I started fantasizing to buy this lens:

Well, then I sobered up :) Still, buying such a lens would be a way more practical than obtaining the next e-bike :)

Stefan, where there's a will, there's a way.

The Pentax Limited primes are absolute gems. Small, phenomenal optics, impeccable design and construction. What's not to like?

The 77mm especially is nice for headshots and head and shoulder portraits. Stop it down a smidge from wide open and marvel at the gorgeous bokeh.

I don't think you can wrong with it. But I am biased toward such things.

Zbikeman, what I could save from the fire of my home was not only the camera body but also a Sigma 35mm f/1.4. I also saved an excellent electronic flash. I need to dig deeply into the "survival storage" as I hope I could also find a unique Asahi Pentax SMC-K 135 mm f/2.5 telephoto from 1975. If I find the latter, buying the FA will be a logical step to return to photography.

If I could only find that telephoto...

You saved the Siggy, congrats!

Ever try www.pentaxforums.com for your 135/2.5 PK or 77 FA?

I used to be on there long ago. I remember coming across some good deals in the classifieds occasionally.

Here in the US, we have mpb.com, keh.com, adorama.com and a bunch of used equipment sellers which might carry either lens. I don't know if it's cost-prohibitive to ship a lens from the states, though.

Had the 43mm 1.9 Ltd a decade ago. Beautiful bit of glass. Should never have sold it on. Terrible habit of buying & selling on lenses then regretting it.

I didn't know there were so many Pentax fans here :) I appreciated Pentax DSLRs (K-5 and K-1) for the great capability of taking pictures at low light.

January 2018. The singer ran into the audience (absolute darkness). A flash light bounced from a high ceiling made that scene alive.

Insane colours.

In photography, there is the third player by the name of SONY. Sony actually revolutionised the industry by killing the single lens reflex camera with the mirrorless. If we draw an e-bike analogy, that might be DJI with its Avinox. Automotive? Perhaps Tesla or Rivian? Only the Pepsi-Coke has not changed :)

It was always Canon v Nikon with the fan boys in the old days. The big two. Pentax, Olympus, Minolta et all were small fry in comparison. Minolta being bought by Sony to start their photography journey later on.

I always had a soft spot for Konica. Best glass I ever owned was the Hexar AF. But a bitch to use unfortunately.

True. Until Sony checkmated them.
Also, Pentax as the inventor of the pentaprism single lens reflex camera was big in 1970s. Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr used Pentax cameras.

Used be Levi's v Wrangler too!

"Don't talk Levi's, 'cause I tried them" :D
