Sound in the Ears

FYI, guys, I hear that Apple’s ear buds (AirPods) now support some hearing-aid type noise cancellation in a pass-thru mode which I think is supposed to highlight ambient conversation, etc.. One of my friends told me it’s not very good, but maybe it’ll get better. Check out “transparency mode” if you’re interested.

Re: Cat-Ears… Definitely going to order a pair soon!

Nothing on the ride phases me, though I'm rarely over 30 or 35 MPH. Now it's the REALLY loud sounds that are excruciating; whenever anyone goes to adjust levels on a PA system (again, particularly in rehearsal) I cover my ears with my hands. The other thing I can't stand is too many sounds at once. If I come home from my work, my wife starts talking to me, she's listening to opera, and the dog is barking, I feel like someone is scraping my whole brain with sandpaper.
That's a condition called recruitment. Your damaged hearing is more sensitive to loud, abrupt noises. I have it myself, along with tinnitus. I have a notched hearing loss, so no need for hearing aids now, but when it's time, I'll have the audiologist program out the tinnitus.

How do they program out Tinnitus when I read it is generally thought to be in the brain not the ears? Curious

There are a number of strategies, but the main one is to identify the main tinnitus frequency, and overamplify the frequencies around it, while notching out the tinnitus frequency. Some also add white or pink noise at a low level for masking. The basic idea is to provide more information so that the tinntius noise is subdued. You can't get rid of it, only hide it.

My doctor told me a few drinks could alleviate tinnitus. I thought he was joking until I tried it and it works!
Studies have shown alcohol can lessen tinnitus in a small number of individuals. Apparently, I'm one of them.
Not practical to walk around drunk all the time though.
I wonder if the doctor would write me a prescription in case I get pulled over and charged with DUI? 🥴

I know hearing loss is a serious thing, but I just can't help myself...

When my day for hearing aids comes, I want the Yesman Deluxe. It uses AI to turn what people say to you into what you wanna hear.

With the marital upgrade, it learns to recognize the voice you repeatedly say "Yes, dear" to and then selectively blocks that voice using noise-canceling technology.

I'll let myself out.

What noise! seriously!

There is always something, and I am not 18! I LIKE to hear when traffic is coming up behind me other than that what noise

My tinnitus got a lot worse after a season and a half of e-biking/biking every day. I had bouts of hyperacusis before then so I was likely already in a damaged state, but it’s been more or less permanent part of my life since. Prior to that I had really no other health issues (I’m in my late 30s). I tried everything, every helmet and device on the market, as well as innumerable specialists.

It’s been just awful. Constant pain that affects every part of my life. I do regret ignoring some of the signals my body was giving me. Hearing discomfort means stop.

I miss biking and I miss living a normal life.

I have tinnitus but not from E-Bike or Biking. How is an E-Bike giving you Tinnitus?

My tinnitus is made worse by wax, inbetween cleaning I start to get continous noise while driving, as the engine and wind noise becomes a jarring distorted rattle, that bounces the screech up and down in unison.
It completly stops after a good ear drop session.
I dare not stick a finger in my ears to itch, 50% of the time it moves the wax and I end up with blocked hearing and steam whistle noises.
I pretty well lost my job and went into depression when this started 25 years ago, no one believes you.
I am now completely at ease and can sleep like a baby even if one ear is trying to mimic a jet engine.
My brain just shuts it out.
If my ears are playing sily buggaz then the ebike motor can rattle them, but strangely the white noise of the wind soothes it.
But again, it has zero effect on my mental health, but back then I was half way to jumping off a cliff.

That sux, Avalanche. I wonder why the specialists can’t help you. Best of luck!

Yikes, Charge. I’m glad you’re better with it these days. That really sucks about what happened to you. Did people think you were faking? Bah!

You cannot appreciate how utterly soul sapping it is till you have it, they do say on the charity web page, find a doctor who has it.
Fair enough, buddy. My father suffered from serious depression after he was discharged from the army due to his back problems. He was one of the first people, post-war, to have a disc operation at John Hopkins. That solved his back problems, but never solved his feelings of failure and life-long depression. I’m super glad you overcame this. Unfortunately, getting older means dealing with some unsolvable problems, and so be it. Either get busy living or get busy dying; that’s my philosophy.

Why not just use earplugs? You can get them everywhere, they're cheap, compressible and pretty much weightless. I used to keep a stash on all my motorcycles - total lifesavers.
