Ride to and past Cardiff Beach often, but this time I brought my dog and another friend for a long walk on this beautiful September day.

And this guy brought his trainer. So he could pedal by the ocean without having to pedal on the road. Too much of a risk, he said.

Inspired by recent EBR discussions of lightweight, low-power e-road bikes and the La Vuelta a Espana Grand Tour road race just completed, went into the Trek shop in Encinitas yesterday to ogle (1) their Domane+ e-road bike, and (2) their best approximation of the Treks raced in the Vuelta.

Found this baby in the 2nd category — a carbon-everything Project One Madone SLR 9 AXS Gen 8 gussied up with chrome paint. Yes, paint. On carbon.

Mads Pedersen and his Lidl-Trek squad raced Madones in the Vuelta. This Madone, Trek's top-of-the-line retail road racing bike, is touted to be their best-ever trade-off between light weight and aero design in their best-ever carbon fiber.

SRAM Red electronic groupset, 2x12. The Project One designation means this bike got its custom chrome paint and groupset at the factory.

And all this can be yours for a mere $17k.
