Shimano STePS E8000 owners?

Yes, unless you have Di2, the motor doesn’t know what gear you’re in. I’m guessing they tune walk mode to be used in higher gears versus the lower gears to prevent someone from using walk mode as a throttle.
Makes me wonder if you couldnt program the walk mode to work as full power?!

Saw where someone put a magnet on the crank and moved the sensor to read the spinning crank arm instead of the wheel to get more than 20mph.

This doesn’t work any longer with more recent software.

By the way, if you are considering using stunlocker.com to derestrict the motor, be careful with your firmware revision. I think stunlocker does not work past 3.8 because starting with 3.9 Shimano shut down some access. Check for yourself to be sure. When I received my bike a month ago it was on version 3.8, and I chose not to update it to 3.9 just in case I decide to use stunlocker down the road. (No desire to do so at the moment.) There are other solutions to derestrict, but stunlocker looks like it's the easiest, a simple software config over bluetooth.

No plans but always good to have options..

What I like the least about the E8000, by far, is the noise. It is loud in any setting, so much so that I find myself turning it off whenever possible, which I actually don't mind because I'd like to condition myself. Today I was riding uphill on a windy road with beautiful scenery, no cars around, and the motor was ruining the mood. So I shut it off.
I got to ride a Bulls ebike with Di2 and e8000 motor for 2 weeks (loaner bike) and about 250 miles while I had a brose bike being serviced.

There was so much to love about the E8000 (display, display control thru left shifter thingy, low q factor). Out of all the mid-drives I tried up to that point (bosch, yamaha, brose) I liked its 'engineering' the best.

But the noise was also the highest. I got comments from hikers and other cyclists almost every ride about being on an ebike. Never got such a thing on my Brose bikes.

I put ALOT of value on noise which is why I favor Brose (along with the most telepathic pedal feel....IMHO).

I was always reminded I was on an ebike with the e8000 which just ruined the mood(for me). On the plus side, I always knew EXACTLY how much it was working.

I did order a bike with an e8000 motor at one point (focus jam 2) due to a great black friday price and a nice low weight platform but cancelled it.

I saw a review of the bafang m600 video that was comparing the E8000 noise to be slightly less but in the same range...

About what value?
I was just going off memory based on some website that mentioned the e8000 being low q factor.

In reality, its not so good

Yamaha PW-X Q Factor Length: 168 mm
Shimano E8000 Q Factor Length: 175 mm
Brose Drive T, TF, S Q Factor Length: 179 mm
Bosch Performance Line Q Factor Length: 180 mm

Yamaha for the win

FWIW, Q-factor doesnt matter all that much to me

About what value?
The Shimano service manual specifies this as 177mm.
