REI launches in-house electric bikes, showing off affordably priced Shimano mid-drives

You are of course correct. I apologize.

Hi, Thomas.

I tried to send a private message to you but you are blocked from starting a conversation.

Thank you for the apology. I would like to apologize also for the snarky comment in my last post to you. I felt I had avoided anything to apologize for up to that point. Two wrongs don't make a right and don't advance a conversation.

P.S. Your icon reminds me of the Irina Dunn quote popularized by Gloria Steinem: "A woman needs a man like a fish needs a bicycle." I don't know if that was what was intended by your icon, but that is what I think each time I see it. Either way, it gives me a little chuckle.

Wow, I feel like this thread has two topics, REI and bankruptcy and secondary is information about the new in-house Co-op City E2.2 bike. I'm choosing the secondary topic. I just did a test ride of the bike. OH MY. It was a winner. Granted I am not a hard core bicyclist - just a 5.5 60+ female who likes to go on a recreational ride but this was nice. - So nice I took the plunge and it is now sitting in my garage. So when I got home I rode it up the hill that always kills me (since my surgery a couple of years ago) and I put it in eco mode and glided up the hill with minimal effort. Riding the bike I felt stable (a feeling I had lost on my road bike :) ) so I am excited for future rides.

Thank you everyone, for all your comments regarding bikes, components, and experiences with bikes and riding. I have been looking for a bike for about a year and consistently return to this web site and forum for information. I'll keep you posted how I like it over the next few months.

Congratulations on your new City E2.2 and welcome to EBR!

You will love the smooth power delivery and range of the Shimano mid-drive.

The Co-op City E2.2 looks to be a nice bike for the price, especially considering it is purchased at a reputable store that sets up and services bikes. I assume it was in stock. It seems to be the most in-stock ebike at the REI stores In the greater LA area.

This thread is under “Other brands”. Perhaps the site could add in a “Co-op (REI) Forum” Sub-forum for this brand.

A quick search and you’ll see the bankruptcy is quite current. Big bummer!

Pretty sure many corporate bk's are more profit stratagy then tough times. The Covid situation allows many big and mid size companies to jump on the corp welfare wagon and BK costs are a total pass thru to the rest of us.

Just want to clarify that REI is not filing and has not filed for bankruptcy. Other than that, I don’t disagree with the rest of what you are stating, in that corporate bankruptcy rules seem to allow corporations to get out of obligations in a way that doesn’t apply to the rest of us. As the joke goes, “I’ll accept that corporations are human when Texas executes one of them.”

Just use Google search :)

I went to the Huntington Beach REI to get some other items today and they had a Co-op City E2.2 on the floor. In person it looks to be a well built bicycle.

FYI today I asked on the "Ask an REI Employee" section of the REI.com Conversations forum when they were expecting to restock Co-op CTY ebikes and an REI Manager replied "We are expecting to have more in stock by the first half of February."

March update: I asked REI again when they expect to restock the Co-Op CTY ebikes and this time an REI manager wrote “We are expecting to have a shipment of the CTY e2.2 arrive in early April.”

Yes the REI Co-op CTY e-bikes are in stock again. I ordered both the medium and large sizes of the e2.2 for deliver to my local REI. I'm 5'9" and fall in the overlap for the two sizes. The medium came in and I took it for a test ride today. Set the seat post near the top of the range. Still was a tad small for me, so I look forward to trying the large size next week. Very stable ride, smooth shifting, strong brakes, more than enough power for climbing hills, no drag on the downhills, love the Twilight Blue paint job. The Shimano E6100 motor comes with the E-Tube Bluetooth setup but my local REI did not know how to use it. Lots to learn about my first e-bike.

They are back in stock for now although they look to be $200 more now at $1999 for the e2.1 and $2399 for the e2.2

This is a cross post from the REI review site.
Bought the CTY e2.2 bike almost 3 months ago, so these are my impressions from the first 600 miles. I am 5’9”, so I test rode the size medium and large bikes. Went with large, but I wish there was a frame size in between these two sizes.

My first e-bike, and I am very impressed with the smooth power delivered by the Shimano drive system. I can compare with my wife’s Specialized Turbo Como which is about 5 lbs lighter and feels more nimble, but her bike costs much more than the CTY (Como 3.0 is $3250 without rack or fenders, CTY e2.2 is $2160 after 10% REI member rebate).

I do most of my riding in Eco mode and only occasionally switch to Norm mode when I need more speed on a hill. Only time I use High mode is to briefly enjoy the full power of the motor. Granted most of my riding has been carrying only a few bike tools, and I weigh around 145 lbs. Battery range is fantastic. After riding 40 miles through rolling hills, I have seen more than 60 miles left in RNG (range). Bike feel very stable at downhill speeds up to 40 mph and the hydraulic disk brakes are great.

I use lower inflation on the tires to provider a softer ride, 35 psi in front and 40 psi in back. I found the coil spring fork to be somewhat stiff, so an upgrade to air suspension would be desirable.

I upgraded my bike carrier to a 1up USA super duty hitch rack, and it works well with the CTY fenders. I adjusted the spool on the swing arm so it meets the rear tire just below the back fender. Most other tray racks will not work well with bikes with fenders.

Had minor problems with a loose kickstand (fixed by locktite) and rear fender rattle (got used to it). Learned that you cannot power on the motor with a foot on either pedal or you get an error message and no power assist. If that happens, just power cycle the motor with your feet off the pedals and all is good.

All in all, I am very happy with the value provided by this bike. It’s not as good as my wife’s Specialized, but it comes at a much lower cost.
