Radmini motor cuts in out in PAS and throttle

Newbie here. Thanks for the addition to the forum. I have a new to us 2018 Radmini (also a 2017 Radrover)) with 450 miles on it. On my wife's Radmini the power keeps cutting out regardless if its in throttle mode or PAS. I have pulled all the connections apart, cleaned male and female ends of the terminals, removed the controller and cleaned those connectors. I have the bike upside down and noticed that when i use full throttle, I'm getting maybe a third throttle. I did the same to my Radrover and it did full throttle. The battery has a full charge and I cleaned those connections too. Any ideas would be appreciated, thanks in advance.

Time to get the multi meter out! Start at the battery and trace the power flow to see where it stops.

Is there power available at the battery connection?

Likely a long shot, but there are some connections internal to the battery. The on-off switch, the connections at the fuse(s), and the fuses themselves are some that come to mind.

I hit a bump with my 8 month old bike one day, causing a total power failure, that causing a 2 mile walk home. All up hill in blistering hot weather. 'Bout killed me. Anyway, that was traced to the battery switch which I never used anyway. That switch is now bypassed and will never give me trouble again....

This was the second time the bike had a power failure. The first I had the bike upside down and it just started working again. I hate erratic stuff like this, as you can only work on it when it's dead!

AHicks, thank you for the reply. Out comes the darn multimeter. Those pins are like microscopic, oh well, nothing better to do, huh? Fuses you say? I did see 2 on the back of the battery case, start there. Thank you. I see you are a strong believer in the KISS method (keep it simple, stupid). Thanks again

I had something similar with my 16 Radrover when the power would cut out randomly. It could be a few minutes into a ride or +2 hours later when it happened. I would get a "30 maintain" error for a few second and the LCD would blank out; but, the Rad would still supply power with the LCD blank for about 15-20 seconds afterwards before powering down. That made it hard to notice the "30 maintain" error with the ebike being powered off. I only noticed it by luck when I looked down while the error was being displayed.

The problem went from once a month and eventually occurring on every ride. Rad had me do a video of when it was happening and sent me replacement LCD screen, wiring harness, and controller.

Combo that worked: New controller+old harness+old LCD

Combo that made it worse: New controller+new LCD+harness didn't matter. The rover would immediately shut down once PAS was engaged or throttle power was applied.

All other combos didn't correct the "30 maintain" error and power shutdown problem.

Still going strong with the 16 Radrover with +3500 miles and zero issues with error codes or power shutdowns since. It sounds like a new controller and/or replace the LCD screen.

Thank you MrGold35. I agree with your diagnoses. I purchased the Radmini used, however, the original owner didn't get delivery until 7/6/2018 so I'm hoping that Radpowerbikes honors their warranty. I just registered it with them, let's hope huh?
I've double checked all the connections that I can find, logic tells me that since it cuts out and when on doesn't go full power that the controller may be the culprit.

You could try switching some parts from the 2017 Radrover. Pull the battery and clean the terminals and use a little dielectric grease and just replace the fuses. This is harder but use a volt meter across terminals with power on to see for a voltage drop. I am with you I worked with computer stuff and hated problems that happen once in a while. Unplug the throttle mode or PAS one at a time to see if it changes

Rad changed the battery and controller from the 2015-2017 Rad ebikes line-up starting in 2018. The parts like the battery and controller are only interchangeable between each other within the two groups of ebikes. I think only the rear hub motor can be switched between all ebikes made between 2015-2019 years of the same make/model?

MRGOLD35 is correct. The 2017 Rover has a Panasonic battery and the Radmini has a much better Samsung. Not even the fenders are interchangeable on a 2017 Rover to a 2018 Rover. I just got a reply from Rad that they did the registration change, so now I ask them about the warranty since it should be covered under their 1 year warranty. Thanks for the reply Johnny333 and MrGold

Well, their reply was NOT favorable. Even tho the bike is not a year old, they will NOT honor the warranty since we are NOT the original purchaser. Kinda weird that you can buy any car and the warranty extends to the stated date regardless how many times it has changed hands. And so far, their response time has not been stellar.

Is the original owner a phone call away to contact Rad power bikes? Rad wouldn't know the ebike was sold. Might be the reason the ebike was sold because of the power issue. The original owner could get the replacement part for you?

Well, ah, because I am an idiot, I already "registered" the bike with Rad this morning and received confirmation. The PO is a super nice guy and would have done that but...... ! It is upsetting that their response time is soooo bad. I might call them and see if they have a better response time. I bought this bike because it is an awesome bike but also because they received great reviews for customer service. Maybe they are just having a busy day, busy weekend, and busy last Friday.

So I had the exact same issue: my wife kept telling me her Rad Mini throttle was cutting out. Sometimes while riding, often it would not start from a stop (PAS or throttle). This went on for a while and was very frustrating because I would get on the bike and not have a single problem so I could not troubleshoot.

Turns out she was inadvertently every-so-slightly engaging the brakes by keeping a finger or two on them - just enough to engage the interlock. Once she knew it never happened again.

Well, after 6 emails back and forth between myself and Rad, we figured out what the problem was. The controller defaulted to factory settings, (the lowest) once I followed the instructions that they sent me I was back up and running without spending any money. Thank you for all the replies
