Hubmotor works only in learning mode, Throttle changes the turning direction and more!

Hi

I’ve been reading about my issue with ebike controller in past few days and tried everything I could find (different settings through screen, changing PAS wires, using external 3.5v battery between ground and signal wires of throttle etc.) This is a Chinese (brainpower, Aliexpress, ebay ..) ebike controller 24/36v, max current 13Amp as the picture shows which came with S866 LCD. I’m sure about my wire connections as I checked them almost hundred times. My battery pack is 7S6P Li-Ion 18650 cells 15.6Amp 25.2v (fully charged 29.4v). Controller is 24-36v so I suppose it can be anything in between and not necessarily 24 or 36v, right?! Here are my problems;

  • Hubmotor works only in learning mode and when “identification wires” are shorted/connected.
  • Throttle changes the turning direction of the motor
  • Through LCD setting I can change the voltage from 36v (default) to 24 but then the “walking mode” is like half throttle and just by changing that motor rpm goes way up!
Many thanks in advance!

The dreaded Brainpower controller. I happen to own a 13A model with the S866. Got it running right away, but didn't care for the way the pedal assist worked,

You did disconnect the two green wires after it learned and spun the wheel? I don't recall if you have to power off before you disconnect, Try both sequences.

I thought the voltage setting in the LCD was just to set up the battery gauge. I would leave it at 24V as the working range for a 7S battery goes 21V-29.4V. A 10S battery (36V) has a range of 30V-42V. If you set it at 36, the system will want to shut down if its low voltage circuits are working right,

Anyway, if it doesn't work when you exit learning mode, that's cause for a return. Brainpower quality is suspect to me. I have bought two and one had to be returned. And the one that worked wasn't that great,

if you're still within the aliexpress dispute window, make a video of the fail.

Thanks for fast response. I tried both ways! Disconnecting identification wires before shutting down which immediately stops the motor and after shut down. Shut down only through lcd and disconnecting battery wires. Both same result and motor works only in learning mode. I set the battery to 24v and motor goes crazy! Spinning fast.
I think the controller is defect! I've opened it and see nothing wrong though.
Ordered another controller which doesn't have a plug for lcd and should arrive in coming days. Curious what that one would do!
Does anyone know if the "meter plug" wire on controller can be used as RX (data receiving line of S866 screen)?

Aliexpress accepted the return but I have to go to a DPD collection center over the borer to Germany!! lol (I'm living in The Netherlands). It's 1,5 hours drivind and gas costs would be more than 20 euro I paid for the controller and lcd.

A pic of the 2nd controller which I guess is an older model. Specifically chose a little bit different as I thought the controller that I already have perhaps is not compatible with my hubmotor. It's a batavus/sparta-ion hub motor and original battery was 24v NiMh

Was the wheel in the air? This MAY be normal IF the PAS levels control speed and you were in the highest assist level. Some controllers will spin the motor at full speed, unloaded, if no speed limit is present. The wheel speed will be different when the bike is loaded with a rider.

The wheel is indeed in the air and without load. If it was the only issue I would take it for a ride and test is but almost nothing works! :)

Well, now you won't have a display anymore. You will need to figure out how the three speed switch works, or buy one of those switches to be able to have more than one speed.

No, an S866 display won't work with a foreign controller. Designers have to agree on a command protocol, a command set and memory maps between display and controller. It;s not an open standard.

a Stupid question! Pls have a look at this picture. You see the 5 hall sensor wires of my hubmotor. Do these wires go directly to the controller (in my case they do!) or there should be some kind of circuit board inside the motor? Some kind of connection between these and the three phase wires?
I'm asking this because the 2nd controller came and I still have the same issue. I disconnected the hall sensor plug and nothing changed like hall sensors do nothing! Before I'd checked the voltage of each of blue, geen, yellow wires of hall sensors with ground of the plug and in turn they changed from 5 to zero volt by turning the wheel slowly. So I assumed the hall sensors were ok!
