New Smartphone app, Ebike control

https://www.kickstarter.com/project...nced-smartphone-app-to-control-you?ref=e30ixj

Not a fan of these Kickstarter things, but this looks an interesting one specially as it will also control all Bafang motors,,,, seems ideal for my BBS02

What you all think??
Some odd comments. Like the criticism of the Cycle analyst. It's really not expensive. The wattmeter is junk, and the LCD's well they are usually pretty useless for accurate battery and power logging. They don't quite tell us which parameters they will access in the BBSxx series. That will make a difference. The CA doesn't interface, and anyone well informed will do as I did and wonder why they chose to include it as a part of the review.

In the end I do like the idea. BBSxx programming is clumsy as it is now. And the BBSxx displays are useless for any real information.

i would love to be able to program the pas on my 500 watt bafang hub drives

if something comes out that does that well i will buy it

Hi!
What is there to program for a hub drive? Other than what a Cycle Analyst can do? I'm not trying to be a smart a$$, just not sure what you would do?

hey

my understanding is the CA cannot control bafang motors just by plugging in, i looked into this a little while ago and dont remember all of it now

or maybe i just was reluctant to cut up my wiring harnesses with good higo connectors and connecting the CA, dont love the way my cemoto looks and is not as waterproof now that i added a CA to it
although the CA has some really cool paramenters

anyway i would like to be able to program the pas speed/power on each level- change 5 levels to 9 levels etc

dont know why the bafang mid drives seem to have a hack to program some stuff but none of the hub drives do, weird

at interbike i rode biktrix prototype for the bafang max and i really liked the pas set up
but i rode a few more chinese bafang max and they were crazy fast in level 1 and i did not buy them

so my thinking is all of these bafang motors mid or hub are programmed different, i dont like a bike that is super fast in the low levels

one of my 500 watt folders from interbike has a pretty smoothly controlled throttle but pas was useless to me, i tend to put friends on these bikes that have not ridden in 30 years and i dont want the bike bolting in level one

Well the mid drives have built in controllers and the hubs use any compatible controller. You should be able to set up multiple pas settings with the CA2.4 or CA3.

ahh now i see why the bafang mid drives are all hackable
are all mid drives like that or just bafang?

think i have the CA3 on the cemoto
we did program pas levels on it but it only has a 3 position switch, so you can only use 3 levels , at one point grin had a dial- dont know how many levels available on it, but it was not available when we did the mods with the CA - seems like there was some disadvantage to using the dial, not sure if it was no throttle override or what
3 levels with the torque sensor was really ok

i know the wiring harnesses are so different on each bike so it has to be this way , but it is hard for me to cut up good waterproof wiring harnesses to put the CA in

love that juiced makes that an option for plug and play

The Cycle analyst ought to domwhat you want.

i understand now. Ki forget that many do not want to make changes in wiring. I apologize for not thinking this through. I only buy controller that a CA ready. My bad for not thinking...

these controllers you buy that are CA ready do they just plug into any bafang motor?
and do they come with wiring harnesses for the brakes, display etc? or do you make wiring harnesses for all this

this looks cool

but will it only work with the mid drives? i dont know if bbs only refers to bafang mid drive or any bafang motor

(Link Removed - No Longer Exists)

BBS refers to mid drives. There are controllers that will run bafang hubs and i think EM3ev has higo connector controllers with cycle analyt plugs. But. What is the goal.? Just more pas levels or different pass levels? Which bafang motor, controller, and display do you have now?

all the bikes i would mod are bafang hub drives but all different brands, controllers, displays etc

the goal for me in any modification on these cadence bikes would be programming pas levels to be smooth/controlled while keeping throttle override
and adding hydraulic brakes with cut offs that hopefully would just plug in..
preferably without chopping up my wiring harnesses, but i know that is just wishful thinking

it is hard to buy complete kits and swap all this out on bikes i dont use much and when there is nothing functionally wrong with the bike the way it is...

but at some point i probably will do full kits with those 2 options on my 20 inch fat tires, and the way it looks those will have to be mid drive kits, which is fine

anyway thanks for all the info, i was just intrigued by the fact this smartphone app might do it without cutting up wiring harness etc

There are more higo splitters and accessory cables on the market. Not being familiar with your harnesses im not sure of their value. But empoweredcycles, california ebike, and e-bike-technologies.de, all have some very useful higo solutions. If you have brake levers with cutouts now changing to hydraulic cutouts should be just plug and play. I use hydraulic cutout adapters on cable brakes to keep my bikes current levers. Usually they are better than those sold with bafang kits. Customizing a harness and having it stay nice and neat id pretty simple with a solder iron and some heat shrink tubing. Id happily help if i knew what you had and what you needed. I was terrified of cutting and joining wires until i had a couple of successes. Getting a wattmeter wired into my harness so it came on with my display was my first success and really motivated me to do more. I'm thinking some things you might want may not mean cutting. Holler if i can help. I'm retired and have nothing to sell, passion is free. VVBG.

The eggrider looks like it replaces my C961 display with a module that sends the same data to a phone. It might have some short cuts so a single button gets into the BBS programming mode and quickly sets things like the number of PAS levels, maximum speed. It adds a trip odometer, maybe two of them. But basically, I see nothing more in the info than what's already in the various BBS02 displays.

No I do not want one, not even if you gave me $50. My damn Samsung phones are problematic when outside. Always low on battery. Apps hang up. Cannot see display in the sun. Why would I want to mess up a bike ride by having to depend on my phone.

There are more critical registers inside the controller that set max current, PAS power levels, etc, and I would think it feasible for the unit to access them, but probably not possible when the motor is running.

In the future, if they linked the app to GPS and acceleration sensors in the phone, you could get realtime display on the road grade, and get Strava like data. But you can get that now.

I have a device from Dillenger that has BBSxx programing stored on it so i can easily change programming setups. I'm with you. Bluetooth is cool, but isn't always consistent, convenient, or easy with apps from big name developers. I ride to free myself from the phone. But I'm old and grumpy. I retired a decade ago and retired my blackberry too. Just recently got an iphone to control my hearing aids. There are improvements over the C961, but they added complexity, not much more. I like the 961. I have every other display in my parts box, just no reason to bother.

hey thomas where are you located?

if you were close i would be very interested in paying you swap a couple of the bikes over to hydraulic brakes

I'm a lot g way off, and I don't do bike repair. Im good with the electrical stuff and sorting build kits. Not any strong hydraulic experience. The systems that will perform like i want are out of my budget. Ive slowed my bikes down and use Koolstop eBike brake pads. Good for up to 20-22mph. Most riding is aroung 15mph. No issue. I bought some BB7 mechanic dis s. raved about by many. I kept my v brakes and 26" disc. <Grin>
