Narrow Wide Chainring: Chain Placement.

Has anybody ever seen this before?
Basically instructing to place the Wide Tooth of the chainring between in the outer plates of the chain... leaving the Narrow Tooth to sit between the inner plates.

I haven't and have never take care to place the chain as shown.
I wonder if it has any validity?
Would it reduce Chainring wear as well?

I sometimes use them. They do make the drivetrain last longer, help prevent drops, and allow for better power delivery. It just plain fits more securely. The best is narrow/wide with an offset.
 
Just confirm the BCD, Bafang is 130 and you will be in better position to hit the low gears and not drop on the high gears.

No I get all that and I've been using them for a while. Chain drops are non existent.
I just didn't know that you were suppose to line up the Wide Tooth on the ring with the Outer Plate on the chain.
I checked mine after seeing this and that's how it is now... Just not sure I've always put it on that way.
Wondering now if it just naturally lands that way when you lay the chain across the top of the ring.
Too lazy at the moment to test that 🙃
 
Okay. Do you have a small piece of spare cut chain? Take the real chain off the ring and play with placing the spare length on the teeth. Move it back and forth 1/2 inch and see how it aligns. The wider tooth goes in the wider gap of the outside plates the wider part of the chain. The narrow tooth goes to the narrower inside gap.

Man, I am still sick from that bad cobb salad 24 hours ago. I can barely keep even a sip of Gatorade down.
 
I found out the same thing, on the Wart Hog bike,
when I was experimenting with the chain fitting, using a single rear gear as a result of destroying the derailleur, during a cow/horse trail ride, had to move the chain forward or backward to get a good fit.
That's the reason I have a chain tensioner on both my bikes,
with the thick/thin chains.
 
Yeah this is common, often these rings have a little diagram engraved in them. When placed incorrectly the risk of chain drops is allegedly higher by some unknowable amount.

Depending on the design, the chain may not really fit well the other way, so yours may always be correct. The praxis ones, for example, will definitely go on the other way.

I remember learning about the thick-thin chain rings from you.
I didn't know that there was such a thing?

I remember that you couldn't use a half link to lengthen your chain, because it messes up the count.

The fat chain ring teeth need the extra space.
The chain wouldn't seat itself in the chain ring if it's off by a tooth.
 
I don’t have a choice of positions. The 12 speed SRAM chain only fits one way on the Wolf Tooth NW chainring.
Ok... I just checked and the same goes for my KMC e8X chain and my $6 AliEx Special. It currently has 2500mi on it showing very little wear. Mostly only the Black Anodised has worn from the teeth.
In other words no instructions are necessary because it's basically Gionni (idiot) proof and the chain will only sit on the N/W ring in its proper alignment.

Curious though... Were you aware of this ring/chain plate alignment?
I've been using N/W rings for a while now and have never come across this information.

Of course I knew about the proper alignment! 😉.

When the time comes to change my KMC e9 chain on my other ebike, I’ll need to check if the same applies.
