My 2nd ebike.. this time with killer motor

I've been riding my Haibike sduro trekking ebike for 4 years and have loved all of it EXCEPT for the lack of power. Last year I had my eye on the FLX blade 2.0 with the killer bafang ultra motor but the cost was over $7,000.. Suddenly, ebike prices have dropped significantly and that same bike is now $5,500. It was still out of my price range so I bought a Rize RX.. Same bafang ultra motor but cheaper components. Chain drive instead of belt drive, cassette instead of roloff hub. spring fork instead of air shock but the price was almost HALF that of the FLX. I hope I'm not disappointed with the lower shelf components. I realize the ultra motor could/would easily eat chains and cassettes but I will go easy on the drive system and hope to get some decent life out of it. I'm very excited to now be able to hopefully go up a long hill at 15mph instead of 5mph with the Haibike. I also realize the bike is "illegal" on our Michigan bike trails but TBH, I've never seen anyone checking motor output. They might check the throttle which I will simply disconnect for MUP riding but I doubt that would even happen.

"A wife asks her husband who is a butler to the Count what upper classes have for dessert. He explains wife a recipe for baking a cake. She starts baking the cake.
-- Wheat flour? I don't have any. Rye flour it is!
-- Butter? I would be crazy to waste butter. Lard it is!
And so she goes with about any ingredient of the cake.
Eventually, the husband and wife sit together to have the cake.
Wife says with disgust:
-- Unbelievable what s*it the upper classes get for dessert!"

LOL... yep, I should have spent the big bucks but that would have been difficult to get past the wife. I will suffer with the peons on my new bike

The primary reason for buying this bike is the bafang ultra motor. I've read about some reliability problems and issues with noise but hopefully I'll have good luck. It seems the motor needs grease after a short time and it's a real PITA to take it out of the bike , open it up and grease it. Youtube is my friend here. I would have the exact same motor with the FLX blade 2.0... FWIW, the yamaha motor in my Haibike has been flawless for 4 years and 3,000mi. I plan to keep the Haibike in case the Rize bike is down for whatever reason. My biggest complaint with ebikes has been the lack of power from the get go.

It is not a matter of luck it is the absence of a suitable grease and amount of even that from the factory. Well worth it to do the job ASAP. You just need a crank puller and a 16pt bb socket, a cheap one will do, along with a few hex wrenches and sockets. Best advice is to perform the task while the bike is resting upside down on the seat/handlebars (make sure anything on the bars is out of the way). I have had good luck adding a heaping tablsp of JohnDeere cornhead grease but others have used other types. There are posts about it on here I am sure you have seen.

You will be getting the CANBUS version of the motor so learn to be happy with how the throttle and torque assist levels work because you won't be able to change them. Always letting off on the power when shifting will go along ways toward extending drivetrain life. They make a shift sensor you can apply but just letting off does the same thing.

what size 16 point socket will I need? I do plan to add grease to the motor sooner rather than later

I think I worded that wrong. I'm not talking about take off power. I'm talking about the lack of power in general

Its funny, I have toyed with the idea of fitting the bbshd to the Haibike if the motor failed, just a couple of machined plates would do it.

The bbshd is the same power as the ultra but whisper quiet.

The ultra is capable of MUCH more power than the bbshd. Of course since I'm stuck with CANBUS, and limited technical skills, I doubt I'll ever see more than 1,000 watts. I do wish the ultra was as quiet as the bbshd.

The is only one size. Just google 16 notch bb tool. The socket type works best and a cheap one will do the trick.

Thans JRA.... Roy: I'm not worried about the bike being "massively underpowered" and I understand all of these bikes sold on the internet have pretty much the same business model.. it's a gamble for sure.

LOL.. I don't think he'd have been as tired as he was if he'd had an ultra, he was pushing really hard. I'd think the motor would overheat on such a climb. I just got back from a ride on my Haibike with Yamaha PWX motor. The bike is very quiet and I have almost 3,000 trouble free miles on it. I should probably just stick to the Haibike for reliability. The yamaha system is smooth and natural. You almost forget it's an ebike. I'm expecting the bafang to be somewhat of an untamed beast in comparison. Any way the bike is to be delivered this upcoming thursday and I'll be sure to update this thread with my thoughts, good OR bad. RIght now I'm just hoping the box isn't destroyed when it gets here.
