I live on the Island of Maui and after doing massive amounts of research on E-bikes I have found out that there are only two companies that will ship to Hawaii and neither has a bike that would be adequate for me. I need something that is going to go up some pretty steep hills as I live Upcountry Maui and the hill grade just from my house to the main highway, although pretty short is steep. Like a 40% grade at least. Then the other hills I would be riding on are long and gradual. I was looking to buy it here in Maui so I can get the bike worked on locally if I need it to. One dealer sells the Fat Murf bike which I liked very much but it has a 52 Volt battery that is only 500 watts so I am not sure if it will go up those hills very well. The One that Segway Maui sells is a Nuovo S21 Mid Motor bike with a 1,000 W Bafang mid motor. I cannot find anything about this bike anywhere online and I think Segway Maui has some kind of an exclusive on it. I am sure it is a Chinese manufacture bike. Take a look at the photo I attached and see if you guys can identify the bike or point me in the direction of an equivalent one so I can find more info. on the bike. Any help would be appreciated.

ALOHA!

The Fat Murf is not made for steep hills imo, the other bike(Nuovo) is made for climbing but the battery is to small for the motor they are using and your going to burn right through it very fast. given the choice i would buy the Maui and an additional battery. I would suggest calling them for more specs, i looked at the website and they dont even say if the brakes are hydraulic or mechanical lol, not that it even matters if these are the only bikes on the Island lol. They look to be using a BBSHD motor and its full suspension so the price is not horrible but its also not great because of the tiny batteries Segway Maui use.

I sent an email to the dealer that sells the Murf bike. This is the battery they are using. 910wh, 52v, 17.5a/h. In your answer, you said, given the choice I would buy the Maui and an additional battery. Did you mean the Murf? The dealer said that some of the owners of the Murf are climbing the hills to their homes in Haiku etc. with no problems.

The FatMurf has a great size battery but its still a hubmotor bike and can be pushed to far with steep climbs. Murf electric have some weird bikes that dont seem well thought out like the Alpha Murph which has a 1000w BBSHD Middrive but only one gear and its a very high gear, goofy setups like this will only cause premature motor and drive train FAIL.
Murfbikes also mention that the Alpha Murf is better for climbing over the Fat Murf, The reason the AlphaMurf is better for climbs is because its a middrive with a BBSHD(maybe BBS02?) motor just like the Nuovo only the Nuovo has gears and full suspension for the same price. If you dont care about suspension you could just get an Alpha Murf and add a Freewheel/cassette and a derailleur, you would have a solid climber much better than the Fat Murf with a huge battery!

Thanks for all your info. I have only one big short hill from my house to the main highway. Then the highway has some mild hills only. It is mostly flat all the way from my house to Hana on the backside road. I won't be riding all the way to Hana most likely ever but I may go as far as Kaupo. If I decide to ride down to town the drive from the dump road to my house is a long-ass Hillclimb. But I would probably park my car down the hill by the dump somewhere then ride to town so I can avoid the hill. I like the Murf bike much better. I have to do some fieldwork in Lahaina today so I am going to look at the Segway bikes. They also have the E Joe Onyx bikes and another E Joe bike in stock but I did not really find those interesting.
What would be your best recommendation for a bike for me based on what you know now in the $2,000 to $2,500 range. I will take a look at what you recommend and see if there is any way I can get one shipped if I decide to go that way. Thanks!

well it does not sound like your going to be doing a ton of steep climbing so maybe something like the fat Murf will work for you!

Yeah, and I am pretty sure every bike is going to have pros and cons. Nothing is going to be perfect. I don't have a lot of choices other than paying a lot of extra for shipping. The dealer here for Murf is selling service for sure. He will give me 10% off any accessories I need and one year of free maintenance. Also, the guys there know the Murf bike and know how to work on them. I went by the Segway place today while I was in Lahaina and even though their hours are supposed to be 9 am to 4 pm they were closed with no sign etc. Looks like a fly-by-night operation to me.

You should be fine! From your original post i got the feeling you were going to be doing some extreme climbs but for normal riding with a few hills the FatMurf should be fine! I have some pretty steep hills in my town and so far my hubmotor cruiser is fine, never had a shutdown or overheat.
