Hello,

I am looking for a city commuter ebike for around $2000-2500 CAD. I have looked at the Voltbike Elegance and the Rad Power, but I really have no idea what to pick. I look the look of Step Through and I need around 500w motor but beside that looking for opinions of what to get.

Thanks!

Can you tell us more about your commute: asphalt, trails, hills, mostly flat, cargo carrying needs, and total weight on the bike (rider + cargo). Will the bike be used just for this commute or will you be using it for trail riding too? This will help us narrow down the LONG list of options.

Mostly asphalt, don't really need any cargo, total weight of myself is 180lb and maybe 20lbs worth of extras. It's mostly just for driving around the city. There is some hills, but nothing too much.

I'd recommend looking at rear hub motor bike's then. They tend to be less expensive and thus you can get a bigger battery for the same $$$. Some manufacturers you can look at that seem to make good reliable products in this price range are: Juiced, Magnum, Volt, and Rad. They all make a commuter type bike. Visit their pages and start reading. There is one other good option, Haibike Urban Plus had a recent price drop to $1699 American. It is a mid-drive bike, which many people swear by, and Haibike is well regarded.

All other things being equal (they never really are), get the bike with the biggest battery you can reasonably afford. Nobody complains that their battery has just too much range. Reviews are littered, however, with people disappointed by the battery not living up to the manufacturers hype.

With your price range, you've got a lot of options since it doesn't sound like you need a lot of power for hill climbing and a 200# weight capacity is well below the max for most bikes. Get comfortable in the recliner and filter through the EBR reviews based on Price Range and Suggested Use. @Chris Hammond made some good brand suggestions. The only thing I would add is visit a reputable LBS that sells AND services ebikes. Nothing beats a test ride and having a positive rapport with the LBS that will be servicing your purchase. You can find an endless supply of opinions on the same bike both positive and negative, but in the end that only one that counts is yours.

Check out Amego Infinite/Magnum Metro and variants. Amego prices are in $C so a bit cheaper w/current exchange rate. 500w motor, rear hub decent 48v 13ah battery. Juiced Cross Current can be ordered with bigger batteries and has 650w rear hub motor, but not a step thru.

A really elegant step thru commuter is the Easy Motion Atom Diamond Wave (Pro version has bigger motor) Court gave excellent review. My wife wants this one.

The Canadian iGo Electric Elite looks like a very nice bike; the main drawback is mechanical instead of hydraulic disc brakes. iGo is supposed to announce new bike models tomorrow.

Trek Verve +, C$2800 on sale
This is Court's pick for 2018 Best Mid-Drive along with another bike that sell for US$5600 .

One issue with Trek is they disable the Walk Assist feature on their ebikes. Also in stop-start city traffic you might like the convenience of being able to shift gear when stopped, an ebike with an internal gear hub can do that but not one with a derailleur, though it's not a big issue if you have a throttle. Have a look at the Biktrix Stunner step-thru, it has a 7-speed IGH, throttle and walk assist, and the BBS02 motor can be tuned down to meet Provincial 500W power/speed requirements.

I went searching and I like the following two, thoughts?

The new iGo looks great. The new model now has hydraulic brakes which is definitely a step up from the Elite. Too bad they did not keep the former rack design though; I am not a fan of using the fender as a rack support point.
