Lock the crank to lube chain - tool

I’ve been winter storing my Levo indoors in a small mud/laundry room and have been using the space to work on the bike. It’s a bit of a hassle on laundry day but beats cleaning the drive train in an unheated garage.

I’ve recently switched to low temp wax formulated Squirt and though it’s still too early to tell, it appears that there’s far less build up on the chain. So far it's yielded better results than with Muck Off -50C that I was using last winter. I’ll find out how well it performs in really cold conditions soon enough.

Gotta say I'm really happy with Squirt lube.
Not saying it's responsible, but may be a contributor to almost 3500kms on a mid drive and my chain shows very little wear. I bet I get another 1000 to 1500kms out of it.
We shall see.

2K miles on this Axle. It's showing mild discoloration near the threads.
Black Anodized.
The axle looks fine. A little dab of thinned black nail polish will do the trick on those threads.

Drivetrain gets pressure washing once a week also once a month chain comes off to soak in a jar of motor oil. This is on my commuter emtb I put 100-150 miles per week depending on weather.
Hopefully I can get 1000+ miles from this KMC E11 chain.
I have entertained the idea of pouring boiling beef lard on the chain, my cousin lives next yard over slaughters cow every week but that's to evolved already.
Wipe and go for me.

pressure washing and motor oil…. i am genuinely curious how long the various drivetrain components (particularly bottom bracket, hubs, etc) of your bikes last.

I use a dry lube and wet the chain with it every other ride or so. If I'm feeling lazy I only do whatever parts are easily exposed. When feeling a little more adventurous, just lift the bike and move the crank forward. I would spend more time trying to figure out where I left the dang thing last if I used a tool to do this job.

Yeah ... Pressure washing will force water past the seals. Hell... just rain alone will do that, sprayed up from spinning tires. One of my most miserable Saturdays ever was cleaning all the rust out of a motor that had a seal fail.

I've got just about 2800 miles on my KMC e11. The only lard that chain sees is if it looks up at me riding the bike.

There is such a thing as overdoing it past the point where it makes sense for mechanical benefit.

On the other hand, if pouring lard over the chain softens the voices in your head who tell you to do terrible things, then by all means, have at it.

These Titanium bolts for chain ring for example.
My love affair with titanium bolts went away when I found out the hard way how easily they snap if they don't like the torque being applied to them. I still have a crankarm I am waiting to fall off on its own because I have a captured bolt in there that has sheared but is not coming out.

Oh and btw on the motor oil: Thats a Hell No. Not just No. :D

Lube the chain is the easiest procedure on an ebike why make it complicated
yep, you just drip lube on the chain while it’s going either forward or backward. never caused me a second thought.

Okay, why do I think that if the chain on e-bikes or Specialized e-bike were not meant to be moved backward there would be a warning in the manual that states: "Do not on potential pain of death or severe injury to yourself or your bike, rotate the chain backward!!!"
How funny! :D

Is it possible I have not said anything in this thread? :) I cannot understand where you guys have issue with cleaning and lubing your e-bike chain:
  • Turn your e-bike upside down
  • Rotating the crank forward, work on the chain from its (normally) bottom side.
I have not seen the threat of death of severe injury in the User Manual related to turning the e-bike upside down either :)
-------------
Ah, I have forgotten something. Some of you own e-bikes as heavy as you simply cannot turn your e-bike upside down :D (I remove the battery from my Vado 6.0 prior to the chain maintenance).
