Lady cyclist killed in Davis involving juvenile on ebike...on the bike path.

Anyone thought that there are a lot more E-bike injuries and fatalities because there are a lot more E-bike riders than acoustic bike riders?
Everyone rides an Ebike now, and rides it a lot further than they would ride a regular bike. Also, the idiot kids on the Surrons and similiar are adding to the statistics.
It’s a matter of the odds.

I wasn't aware that there was a study comparing bicycle injuries to ebike injuries. I would need to understand the conditions of the study to make an informed comment on it. Of course that won't stop me from giving an uninformed opinion. ;) I think there is a difference between a legal ebike and an illegal emotorcycle disguised as an ebike. Hopefully, this study differentiates between them if it is going to be used as justification for further regulation of ebikes.

I personally believe that a 6000 watt Sur-ron and Happy Run are ridden quite a bit differently than a 500 watt Aventon. It would interesting to read a study that differentiated between them.
A woman today, Gretchen, wanted me to work on her son's bicycle "It is really heavy and does not have pedals with a battery the size of a plumber's tool box and the seat is two-feet-long but not very high. The name is something like an Zxnomg Dungchin Lucky 8." And the company is out of business. She is in Marin where they impound, and he is an adult without a driver's licence who does not own a helmet. "It is super fast when it works." I asked if he likes Grey Poupon, instead of asking how he lost his licence.

I wonder if they would clamp down on people actually using the leg assist exoskeletons to circumvent the ban.
It was amusing at first, but could now be the only avenue left for pedal assist.

the statistics from marin county i referenced are the injury rate, not the total number of injuries. of course total number of injuries is a meaningless statistic without knowing how many riders there are!!

Just the other day, I was riding on the bike trail, doing about 22 mph when three kids riding those electric motorcycles blew past me at over 30 mph.
They didn't give any warning or signal that they were passing and got way too close to me.

What if at that moment I had to swerve to avoid debris or wildlife?
I've seen these kids before and they ride extremely recklessly. It's only a matter of time before they hurt someone.

I hate to see restrictions on e-bikes, but these things are NOT e-bikes. They're little motorcycles. The kids are never pedaling them and are using the throttle 100% of the time. I'm not sure if they even have pedals.

A guy called yesterday asked if I could fix the brakes on his bike. It is a Talaria motorcycle without pedals. I told him that it is not a bicycle, not an eBike, it is a motorcycle, and he needs to take it to a motorcycle shop. The fact is no one will touch it. Poison.

But you do realize that they do have legitimate use and I can almost guarantee that they are a blast to ride.
That style isn't for me anymore at this stage.. but I wouldn't mind taking one for a rip in an appropriate place.

fun as hell, no doubt. pretty much any fast, nimble open air vehicle is going to be a blast. i have an electric scooter that my daughter and i ride to school most days, i’m sure it’s illegal in some way… but we ride in the lane, like a car.

they definitely don’t belong on shared paths and bike lanes, and probably not ridden by children. so, given the “no license no registration no insurance no papers” world in which bikes live - and should stay IMO - how do we draw the line and what’s a reasonable system for enforcement that’s self financing?

Yes, if you have a 2,000 acre ranch you can visit each of your wifes noiselessly without waking up all the kids, saying 'Daddy'!

I totally agree... and I know it's not a perfect answer but I lean towards finding ways to enforce laws against bad behavior. Like speeding, racing or weaving in and out of traffic is with cars.
If you're riding an illegal scooter safely and respectfully and it's not bothering anyone...

I fully agree with reeling in motorised vehicles simply because people think their electric propulsion somehow makes them exist in an alternative universe.
But the endless and unstoppable march of risk legislation will ban running down the street, theyve already put legal limits on walking speeds in Slovakia.

And Im watching the EU showing interest in new fully automated driving monitoring breath, face ID, awareness, use of phones etc, all using in car cameras that have to be uncovered for the car to drive.
And people will say thats a good idea.

Well lets just go straight to the matrix pods then.

I hear ya.

It would be so much better just to bust these stupid kids, throw them in the slammer, and have them call Mom and Dad.

Speed zones would be automatic along with peek use tax such as London at rush hour.

Here the cops sit the kid on the curb and make them call mom or dad to come and pick them up. And the bike goes in a city pickup truck. I do not know what happens to the emotorcycle next. The kid needs to show up in court.

If a kid has hurt or killed someone, throwing them into the slammer is not too much. If they are just horsing around and causing an unsafe situation, I think confiscating the illegal bike and fining them makes more sense.
