Impressions after finishing the LEGO road bike set
1. High display value for bicycle lovers.
2. Low play value, but you do get a working freewheeling 1-speed drivetrain to toy with.
3. Very interesting build from a LEGO engineering standpoint.
4. Good value as LEGO pricing goes.
Not a photographic likeness of a modern aero road bike, of course, but immediately recognizable as such. With the disproportionately large down tube, I'm calling it a lightweight road ebike like the ones from Scott, Canyon, Pinarello, and Orbea.
It's earned a permanent spot in my LEGO room.
Lots of small internal parts and unconventional parts usage needed to execute the very unLEGO-like frame angles. Not the strongest LEGO construction, but more than adequate for handling and display. And all done with parts introduced for other purposes in previous sets.
The 64t chainring drives a single freewheeling 16t rear cog. At the model wheels' 10.0" diameter, that 1:4.00 ratio comes to 40 gear inches. At the 26.7" diameter of a real 700x28c racing wheel, this ratio would correspond to a stiff 107 gear inches instead.
The "one-way" rear cog providing the freewheeling action. This is one of only a few parts introduced specifically for this set. LEGO machine builders will find many uses for it.
Near-perfect chainline.
LEGO roller chain's been around since the earliest Technic sets of the late 1970s. Versatile and highly efficient mechanical power transmission, as in the real world, with many great uses in working LEGO machinery.
Chain drives were essential in my 3-body LEGO orrery (see 4:40)...
Little known fact: Most planetary systems are driven by locomotives.
